I kind of frown on the distance limitation, but are the last conversions with external antenna's done without line of sight or with line of sight?

Neither of the linked news sources says whether it is line of sight or not. But given the numbers quoted on internal antennas, I suspect the external antenna numbers are also NOT line of sight.

Re: ?

You are correct WiMax of course will do better if it is line of site but it will work without line of site. The thing that is most dependent on speed is how much bandwidth you are putting to the base stations. If you just have 4 T1's going to it then even with burst you will eat up a base stations bandwidth very quickly. That is why most services limit commercially to 1.5mb because each base station can handle about 200 customers. So the numbers they are using in the test and what they will actually sale I think will be different.

Wireline Backhaul

You are correct that backhaul is the forgotten part in all the excitement. You will notice that EVDO and other broadband wireless commercial services are similarly limited because they usually have to jump onto the old copper wireline system. Until there is a sufficient marketplace, nobody will be widely using SONET to backhaul wireless.

They other par is that "coverage" "capacity" and "capacity" roaming. When we have coverage, capacity and roaming all working seamlessly, then we will have something truly meaningful.
