DVI or Analog Connection for LCD

Finally took the plunge and bought a 19" widescreen LCD monitor. What a difference over my old CRT. Anyway, it has a DVI connection and so does my 6600GT video card. It only came however, with the VGA cable. It is connected right now with the analog cable and looks great. What I want to know is will it perform better with the DVI connection?

Re: DVI or Analog Connection for LCD

I have two Dell 18" monitors and they both have DVI/Analog inputs.

With each monitor I have two pcs connected "DVI/Analog" and to be honest the difference is minimal at best.

BTW, one monitor has two nVidia 6600gt connected to it and the other has an ATI 9600 AIW Pro and Radeon 8500 Pro.

Yes, you'll obtain a slightly sharper image.
Text looks crisper and easier to read.
Graphics are improved.

From a technical standpoint, DVI is better. However, when everything else is equal, MOST people couldn't tell the difference.

But everything else is normally not equal. For example, the A/D converter in the Dell 1904FP LCDs is complete crap, largely because the manufacturer figured anyone buying a DVI monitor wouldn't need to use the VGA input. For this reason DVI looks night and day better than VGA, though it is the shortcomings of the converter in the LCD to blame, not the connection type.

My suggestion....pick up a DVI cable at one of the local stores. (Best Buy, Circuit City, etc) Try it out and see if it makes a difference. If not, you can return it for a full refund.

*Personally I would return it either way, and order a DVI cable from Monoprice.com if you decide you want one*

Plus using the DVI connection will mean better quality in non native resolutions too, right?

Actually I've found it just the opposite with the Dells. But it may be just that model.

Re: DVI or Analog Connection for LCD

My understanding is that with DVI your video card doesn't have to work as hard cuz it doesn't have to convert things to analog.

If you do decide to get a DVI cable don't go to Circuit City, Best Buy, CompUSA, etc. They want way too much($25 or more). You can get one from eBay for about $2.

I have an extra DVI cable. If you PM me I'll ship it to - if you pay shipping of course. We can work that out later if you're interested.

monoprice.com has very cheap DVI cables if in need, and in all lengths.

Generally, with LCDs, esp the ones from the past 4 years, you cannot tell the difference even on a per pixel basis between d-sub and DVI connections. I will literally use whichever cable is abailable to me first. However, since DVI is a digital bi directional connection, your computer is more able to detect it for the model is really is (it plugs and plays like USB). It is also your only avenue into getting into the super high resolutions beyond 1080p on a monitor (via dual dvi)

I've found that DVI works OK for Windows operating systems - Linux hasn't liked them at all, and I've had to use analog when loading that OS.

I have both a 20 inch DVI/D-sub monitor and 19 inch D-sub only. Both have good pics but the DVI has a finer and sharper resolution the D-sub analog.

I use the analog with a KVM switch and 4 systems running Seti@Home only don't need anything special for them. The DVI digital is on my primary system and I do graphics with it.

By the way both are Dells but the 05 series not the 07s

DVI for a crisp clear, sharp image.

VGA for anything else.

Non-native resolutions look like crap on most LCD's.

that is only some but highend look good

let's say i lower the resolution to 640 X 480 32bits

it will Force it to run 480P mode to keep the good image (monitor also supports 480I but the video card will force 480P cause it will not do 480i in DVI mode)

DVI is indeed night and day, especially on Dell LCDs. It does offer a crisper display, slightly improved colors, and if you had dual screens, is pretty much the ONLY way to get the colors to match between the screens.

As said by others it also eliminates any noise in the cabling caused by any sort of electromagnetic interference.

If you can get a DVI cable cheap, either online or on clearance, go for it. But as said, I wouldn't reccomend going to a big box store because they'll overcharge you.

Try it both ways if you have the time. I couldn't notice the difference on two Viewsonics.

And that was at non-native resolution where DVI was supposed to be sharper.

Also test it with 3D action images if you are into games.

Then let us know if you can.

Check the box again. I have never know any LCD that could use DVI that did NOT come with both cables. DVI and VGA.
If you can not find it in the box I would contact the person/company you bought it from and find out why it didn't have one in the box and if that doesn't work contact the maker and ask for one.

I bought an inexpensive 19" LCD from TigerDirect.

I found this BBR thread and article to be very helpful:

»Analog vs Digital

LCD connections: analog vs. digital
Unless you're a pro photographer, a prepress professional, or someone else who needs superprecise, top-notch image quality, you should be fine using a CRT or an LCD on an analog signal.

If you don't mind me asking, why do some (more than 50% it seems) LCDs come only with an analog connection if DVI is so much better?

Re: DVI or Analog Connection for LCD

So you're saying it's because they're they're not only cheaper to make (to keep smaller screens affordable) but because most people who buy these smaller screen have an older computer without a dvi connection anyway??

My dual monitor setup uses one of each simply because that's what I ended up when I went looking for a bargain video card.

On the analog display some noise and can be seen in the darker greys but then again I am somewhat picky. Most people wouldn't be bothered to take notice of the difference.

btw my monitors are the l1780q from LG and are midrange in quality. ymmv

Just want to update to say I bought a DVI cable today($20@Bestbuy) and do see a difference in picture quality. Text does seem clearer and absolutely no noise noticeable in darker areas of the screen. By the way the monitor that I purchased is a Gateway 1975W widescreen 19" model. I usually make my computer goodies purchases using Newegg. However, I bought this at Compusa. I thought the price was really good. $229-$50 instant rebate=$179-$20 mail-in rebate=final price of $159. Not bad for a 19" widescreen.
