Intel Pro 2100 connected to internet but won't resolve URL's

I'm using a Dell Latitude D600 with the mini-pci Intel Pro 2100 wireless. Upon booting the laptop can connect to any network fine and can access webpages properly. After about 2 hours of leaving the computer idle, I can no longer access web pages by typing in a URL. Programs that are still running, such as Instant Messenger, still function properly despite the seemingly dead connection -- i.e. I'm connected and transmitting/receiving packets. A restart always fixes the problem. This happens independently of what router/wireless service I'm connected to, as I've tried several. I'd appreciate any input I could get.

Are you running any software firewalls? If so, ensure that outgoing/incoming port 53 UDP is not being blocked.

Since a restart fixes the problem, it would be interesting to compare IPCONFIG /ALL readouts from before and after the restart.

Your best bet is to make sure you have the latest drivers for your laptop from the Dell website!

This sounds like a familiar problem I was having a few years back, do you have any Power Saving features on in ur machine that perhaps turns off certain features to save power after a given time if the notebook has been idle?

Because it sounds to me like the laptop is idling and turning off a device and not waking it up when you go back!

Has this issue ever occured when you are actually continually using the laptop? If so, it could be a Windows Service that is timing out. You might want to contact Dell support. And also ensure that you have all the Windows Updates @ »www.windowsupdate.com Please do a custom search rather then Express as it will yield more results.

On an off topic note, you might also want to contact Dell Support because they are having a massive battery recall of 4.2Million notebook batteries where there have been the cause of fire incidents! Make sure that if yours is one of the defective batteries listed, to get it replaced Free of Charge by Dell.

Well, the problem is fixed. This is embarrassing, but it was because of my Zone Alarm firewall. I tried shutting it down, to no avail -- but that was when I let Windows XP handle my wireless connection. During the course of troubleshooting, I converted to using the Intel Pro Set program to handle the connection, hoping that might solve the drop out problem (it didn't.) But I never tried disabling Zone Alarm while using Intel Pro Set, and now that did the trick. Thanks for your help. Oh, and luckily my battery isn't one of the ones at risk. Thanks again.
