Re: Plug UPS into Extension Cord

Like he said. Just tonight I replaced a UPS on an extension cord, I have one of those refridgerator cords on it. Discovered one of the terminals was burnt. That's a potential fire hazard. I'm gonna have to pickup a new cord and check the power rating.

Also, not sure about others, but APC will void the connected equipment warranty if you use an extension cord.

Just make sure your extension cord is heavy gauge enough to handle the maximum current your UPS is rated for. I would recommend 12AWG or larger.

Yes, it should be ok. It's not recommended for the same reason you're not suppose to plug in high current drawing devices into an extension cord -- it heats up and has the possibility of melting / causing fire / etc.

If it's not on Google, then it doesn't exist.

I would like to locate some equipment (modem/router) in a closet in my house, and connect them to a UPS. However, there is no power outlet in this closet. Is it OK to plug a UPS into a three-pronged extension cord? I have seen warnings not to plug UPS into surge suppressors, and I was wondering if this warning applied to extension cords as well. Thanks in advance.

The RIAA - nearly as idiotic as our patent system.
