Could you post more details about your setup? What brand modem are you using? Who is the DSL provider? Is your modem also acting as a router? In that case you would set your router to dynamic IP and not PPoE.

If your SMC router is handling PPPoE make sure your user name and password are correct. Also, leave the service name field blank. Putting the DSL service name in that field caused a problem on my D-link router. Check your MTU setting in the router and make sure it is no higher than 1492. Finally, you may have a router that is overheating or defective. Good luck. I am not familiar with SMC routers. I have worked with D-link and Linksys.

Some DSL providers also require the @isprovider.net/com after the username, ie: port9@bellsouth.net .

In that case I really can't think of anything other than possible the DSL signal is being interrupted or the router is defective. Did you have a basic DSL modem before the router or is this a new install and you're using the router over the ISP modem? I never installed a SMC router before so I don't know about its settings.

I think the problem is either the router is defective or the service name in the Discovery stage. or something else incredibly weird. I'm gonna have to ask out engineer that the service name is and try to match it up. see if that helps.
