Strip Windows Media DRM.

Someone finally figured it out.
edit: I tried it out. It worked without a problem. How long before they fix this? Or can they? If this gets around the internet, entire music library's can suddenly be unlocked if the user wants.

I'm surprised this post hasn't generated any responses yet. I thought cracking WMA encryption was like the Holy Grail for music downloaders. I know I grabbed the program.....just in case.

Im suprised too. I thought of putting it in a more visable forum, but i wasn't sure if that was a good thing or not.
For those that do try the program, be careful. I tried this with a napster song and it did work. But, when i looked at the file info in winamp, it said it wasn't protected but still had a "SubscriptionContentID" listed with a number and other various stuff. Don't let them track it down if it gets on the net. This isn't something you want to share on the net. (Convert it to a different format! aac/mp3/ogg. Anything! The only other device i have other that my computer that can read wma files is my car radio.)

I grabbed this the other day the minute the news broke figuring that it would end up like the Winamp situation,I was able to use Winamp for months to re-encode DRM .wma's until it was blabbed all over the internet and MS forced Winamp to change the behavior of stackable plug-ins.

I am going to try this today to see if works, not really worried since I have used first Tunebite then to MuvAudio where I can convert up to 10 songs at once.

Looks good. Only for WMP 10 or 11, however, which lets me out, as I run 9 (sort of, anyway).
Too bad.

Tried it with a file from Napster Subscription Service and it did not work, tried a single file and tried a batch of about 70 files which took the program about 5 minutes to complete, looks like I am going to have to fiddle around with it,maybe it only works on DRM files that you purchase ?.... djdanska See Profile can you tell me if you were experimenting with a Subscription or a "To Go" or a purchased file ?

As for the hash in the comment section of the ID tag I don't have to worry I do not ever put any converted files for upload ever, and when I re tag them(I have a system I stick to) I remove that ID when writing the tags.

Thanks

~Mike~

whats silly is this type of software is illegal under the DMCA but it should be protected by the fair use clause of copyright law(remember we are allowed unlimited copies of media for personal usage).

I subscribed for a trial subscription. Downloaded a music file. Used the software. (open software. Click on Recover keys, browse for a drm'ed wma file and follow prompts.) I cancelled my sub, Uninstalled the napster file, and then sent the end result file to a different pc that has never had napster on it. (it creates a different file when you run the program. It's not the same file)
It played fine.

Interesting article on this at Techdirt.com on how "Microsoft is now suing the anonymous creator of the FairUse4WM system. They're not suing him for circumventing the copy protection, but rather claiming that he must have access to proprietary Microsoft source code in order to do what he's done. This is interesting in a few ways, including the seeming admission that Microsoft relied on security by obscurity in their DRM system, hoping that no one with malicious intent would ever get their hands on the source code."

BTW: there has been updates to the program and I can report that it still works well,I do not use it but tested it out just to see if Napster files could be stripped

Thanks for the recommendation. I tried it with some of my
Rhapsody subscription tracks. It works perfectly, though
the trial version limits you to only 30 seconds. So I ended
up buying it.

It will save having to launch a program like Audacity or
Nero Wave Editor to record the music as it streams.
