Speed Concerns - when to call Shaw?

Hello all!

So, I've been lurking here for the past few months, happily enjoying myself and being on my merry way.

Over that time, I've seen several threads from users concerned about their speed, and the response, generally, has been "phone Shaw".

Generally. The Internet being what it is, of course, we are not going to always see speeds hitting advertised speeds: that nasty "up to" qualifier in the advertising.

So, then, do the nice people here have any suggestions on when it is a justified call, and when it is just The Way It Is? That is, how fast is too slow?

My summary: Shaw Xtreme. Using Shaw's speed test, it is a steady 5MB down, 1 up. (Well, 978K up. Close enough.) Using Seattle's SpeakEasy, 2017 down, 941 up. For reference, I'm in southeast Alberta - Seattle is closest, physically at least.

I'm going to do the skip the router thing and try again late tonight / early this morning to see how that changes things, if at all.

I've tried to do the 192.168.100.1 connection, but except for getting the opening page once, I can't seem to pull it off to get the numbers. Either I'm missing a trick, or my modem is cranky about such things. (Uhm, SB5101)

So - any opinions? Are things just fine and I need to deal with it? Or do they look low to the trained eye? I have no wish to complain without justification, but, at the same time, I'm wondering why I'm paying the extra $10 a month for "High Speed" download speeds (although the upload speed seems appropriate.)

Thanks!

Re: Speed Concerns - when to call Shaw?

Others may say otherwise, but I would have called at 5Mbps when the maximum was 7Mbps. Now that it's 10 I'd definitely be on the phone. As it is I'm just over 7Mbps and I'm about to call.

Here's what I would say would be grades of service for an on net (speedtest.shaw.ca) test.

Xtreme I
9 Mbps + = Optimal
7 Mbps to 9 Mbps = Acceptable
7 Mbps and under = Possible speed issues, time to bypass router, try direct, separate PC, firewall... If none resolve, time to call Shaw to see if they notice anything.

Regular High Speed
4.5 Mbps + = Optimal
3 to 4.5 Mbps = Acceptable
3 Mbps and under = Time to call Shaw

I in no way speak for Shaw, but those would be my personal guidelines after running multiple speed tests.

I was getting 5mbps speeds a few days after they rolled out the 10mbps, i called them up and sure enough they told me my account was stuck on 5mpbs for some reason.

they removed me exteme-i and then added it to my account again and i was back to 10mbps

Re: Speed Concerns - when to call Shaw?

if you have ruled out everything on your end (router, virus..etc)then its time to give shaw a call.
