2wire wireless modem / not really wireless?????

Ok, i am a newbie and i am a bit confused here.

I signed up for ATT/DSL and recieved the 2wire wireless modem/router.

My only computer is a laptop with a Belkin wifi card , i wanted to connect the modem and then have my wifi card pick up the wireless network,... this all seemed like a plausible situation for me, as i pick up other peoples networks, networks in libraries, etc.....

Anyways I upack this modem and come to find out that i have to plug in the yellow ehternet cord into my PC, and then based on the instructions i can connect additional PCs wireless, this does not help me as i have no additional PCs, and i have no desire to buy a laptop card with one of those ethernet adapters .....

I dont undrstand what type of modem i should have ordered and what i should do to actually make this a wirelss connection?

Please help, i feel i am confused and missing some big chunck of wireless internet information.

Thankyou

That is just a general instruction for most people setting up a desktop. You can connect to the 2wire wirelessly no problem.

Fire up your laptop and what ever software you use to configure your wireless card. Look at the networks available. One of them should read like: 2wirexxx where xxx is the last 3 digits of your 2Wire's serial number on the bottom label. Like 2wire385, etc.
Then you need to make sure your card is set to WEP encryption, and the encryption key is the number in the square brackets on the bottom label. Enter that number into the key field of your wireless setup program and that should be all you need to start talking to the 2Wire.

in more simple terms..

you need to have a direct cable connected only for 2wire setup. then, you activate wireless.

once its set up, you can then disconnect your cable and start using your wireless.

So, i do have to connect it wired in order to set up? meaning i have to go and get that ethernet port adapter thing?

dood, every laptop has a NIC port. Just plug your laptop into your 2wire modem with a network cable.

then go to your 2wire.gateway type URL in a browser. Then you can go to the wireless tab, figure out your security theme and things like that. Then you can enter that key just once on your laptop wireless properties for that instance, and it should automatically connect from then on.

No, you do not need to connect via ethernet. You can connect directly with the wireless. Its just a little harder to set up because you have to program in the wireless WEP key before the 2 will communicate. Just set up your wireless card on the 2wire network with your last 3 serial number digits and the encryption key in the brackets and you can connect to the 2wire.
There is no need to use ethernet if you dont have an ethernet port.

Once in the 2wire oyu can set it up by opening a browser and going to http://homeportal/setup
