.....and excluded VOIP vendors like Vonage, Skype, etc. It only measured cable, telco, and large broadband providers. The US based results still show POTS service levels better. Better even than the cable and telco based VOIP offerings. So this Minacom study was meant to feather Minacom's own nest because they are a provider of services to those the study is praising.
Regionally, the PSTN(POTS) was faster to connect for calls placed to North America (4.3 seconds vs. 5.7 for VoIP), while international calls connected faster with VoIP (8.7 vs. 10.4 seconds for PSTN).
A recent Internet Phone quality study by Brix Networks indicated that 1 in 5 calls were classified as unacceptable, and that call quality was steadily declining. As this study may have created the impression that VoIP service is not capable of delivering PSTN-grade phone service, Minacom felt it should be clarified for both those in the VoIP industry, and individuals and enterprises considering VoIP service, that this report evaluated computer-to-computer (PC-PC) Internet phone service, similar to those offered by Skype, Google Talk, MSN and Yahoo Messenger. The quality and service reliability of these applications does not compare to that of the VoIP phone services offered by telcos, cable operators, and broadband VoIP providers who carefully deploy, monitor and manage the quality of their services.
So, when reading the headline that VOIP quality is better than POTS, remember all the restrictions of the study that qualified that claim.

I don't think "incumbent" VoIP offerings are really such a bargain. Comcast wanted 30/Mo for their digital voice package. That was more than I was paying Verizon for a POTS line.
Of course, everyone has different needs. My POTS line is for incoming and 911 calls only, so a very basic, very stripped down line is fine for me. I use my cell phone for long distance.
I don't know how many people have tried VoIP and switched back to POTS like I did, and I bet it's hard to find a solid, trustworthy statistic. I'm guessing I'm not the only one, though.

1 edit | I just heard an SBC radio commercial today that waxed poetic about the reliability of POTS versus VoIP it went on to state that 11 customers per hour come back from VoIP(they forgot to mention how many are leaving per hour).

They're still right about Skype quality. You get some strange sounds sometimes with that. My mom uses it sometimes to call her sister in Vancouver and it gets weird echos and stuff. I know it's free but I wouldn't pay money for it based on what I've heard. If you've ever listened to the TWiT podcast you can hear the weird stuff that happens every now and then when someone's voice cuts out or garbles since they use Skype to do their podcasts instead of everyone on a conference call. |

Seems like I said a while back that VOIP was unreliable crap and the smart move was to stay with POTS (like I have. Besides, why pay more for less?) unless you just used a "free" VOIP service for long distance. But then, with the proliferation of cellphones, LD isn't a problem for most anyway. |

I get weird echos and noises on cell calls to Texas. It's just a digital artifact of the satellite relay where your voice is echoed back to you for whatever reason. |

I'm sorry but... Broadband connection quality MATTERS MOST!
My guess is people who try VOIP and are unsatisfied don't have the VOIP provider to blame, but their broadband provider instead.
Case and point: I have Sunrocket and a friend has Vonage. I also have Cable, DSL, and Wireless access I can test each out on.
When using the wireless provider (which is fine for web browsing or downloading, but not games) both Vonage and SR get dropped calls, echo problems, etc.
When using the cable modem (10mbit) it was perfect, better than POTS on both Vonage and SR.
The DSL is a little different beast. Its only a Verizon 768 line and like most cheap "consumer" router/modems the VZ one has issues. For example, I can run a ping and every minute like clockwork I get a brief connection interruption. On VOIP this is barely noticable, but it DOES make the call sound like a cell phone dropping out briefly.

I don't know about you, but I was able to terminate 24 simultanious calls thru my Asterisk PBX for FREE, to the USA, using VoIPUSER.ORG. They don't charge a thing, and are based out of the UK. You can call anywhere in the world, and the quality (considering it's free) is great. uLAW and GSM compatable. May not be $0 in the US yet, but it sure is elsewhere.
