You are mistaken as well. Sprint puts the tethering application on the device! It comes with the software, unlike the Verizon version. Furthermore, Sprint is the only carrier that encourages tethering and internet connection sharing. This has been discussed numerous times on this website.

Yes, they now offer this as an addon $15 for select PDA phones. My Treo 700p is one of the included ones. It was extremely simple to set this up with VZ and I am currently enjoying the "legit" tethering now WITH the evdo speeds.

I got away with tethering my 144k simple Sprint network, but that was because I couldnt pull down allot of data on it. EVDO will rack up the data usage MUCH faster.

I download on average around 1mb just about all the time and occasionally around 1.5mb.

The Speed is better then advertised, which is really rare for a service.

From Sprint's blurb...

The Merlin S720 will initially be sold through Sprint indirect and business sales channels and online at www.sprint.com for a suggested retail price of $249.99 and as low as $99.99 with a two-year subscriber agreement. Service plans for the card currently range from $39.99 per month for 40 MB to $79.99 per month for unlimited data usage. Customers signing a two-year subscriber agreement will be eligible to receive unlimited data usage for $59.99 per month (no separate voice plan required). Sprint plans to make a variety of compatible devices in varying form factors available later this year.

No let's see them define "Unlimited".

There's your catch.

For some people it works, but in general you need to pay for the plan.

Also it is possible that you be billed PER KILOBYTE.

See sprint.com for further details.

My understanding is that tethering is an additional monthly charge?
Nope! Free as the sky is blue....
INCORRECT! You need a phone-as-modem plan which is IIRC $40/month, but it does include internet access on the phone which is $15/month....
No, you are incorrect. All you need is the application on your phone and the ability to connect it to your PC. Assuming you have EVDO, you are good to go. I have and use Sprint everyday and there is no charge for tethering.

Is that Verizon I'm thinking of?
Verizon outright banned people from doing it when I was a customer. They also had their phones "locked" to prevent people from trying. I "believe" that some Verizon phones now allow tethering, although I believe you do have to pay extra for this. If you are planning on buying I would double check what I just told you, since I am only going off memory and a quick Google search.

My suggestion would be to wait until they offer this service on a actual phone (instead of the PC card). This way you can still tether the phone to your laptop to use the EVDO, plus if you get the right plan then EVDO is free. You can also make voice calls using the phone as well.
