Re: Free=dialup

Yes, and in the Tri-Cities the Broadband Referendum in Nov. 2004 was clearly to be built without taxpayer dollars as well. But that didn't stop SBC/AT&T from doing everything in their power to lie to the residents that it would somehow increase their taxes. They clearly stated the opposite when it wasn't them saying it.

Hypocrits. Don't believe a thing they say.

HOLY CRAP THIS IS BOGUS!!!!!!

AT&T is the one who freekin stopped this from happening in every major city 2 years ago. This really pisses me off.

So the FCC has allowed the government to circumvent the telecom act of 1996 and restore their monopoly. Now they have expanded into television (now watch their telvision market share EXPLODE). They are vying to stop netneutrality which means that they will then control the content that is on the internet (will you go to verizon.com to search for free or pay a nickel to Verizon to go use google?) They are forcing people to buy products they no longer need via forced bundling (try and buy $14.99 dsl like you see in the commercials and the cheapest possible bill you can get is $55.)

And now cities are giving them the go ahead to be the cities wireless seller? The cities should be suing at AT&T asking them where is the 100Mbps that they have already been paid billions to deliver 5 years ago. »netaction.org/broadband/bells/

But honestly, I don't see a way to stop the telcos short of a change in the AMerican political system. As long as the telcos are spending hundreds of millions of dollars on lobbyists »www.publicintegrity.org/lobby/to···ompanies then the Republicans or the Democrats are not going to take action.

I bet that in the next 5 years the telcos will purchase the cable companies for pennies on the dollar and then your choices will be AT&T wireless, AT&T dsl or AT&T cable.

The concept of the 1996 telecom act was for the government to provide dumb pipes and then there would be competition for bandwidth. This model was used and works in South Korea »www.speroforum.com/site/print.as···cle=1422 and has put them at the forefront of technology. Unfortunately, the government accepted the telcos bid to lay the "dumb pipes" and the telcos used this leverage to eliminate competition and monopolize the the bandwidth market. Now their pockets are so deep that there is no stopping their lobbying power.

If you think that AT&T getting this wireless bid is a good thing then your very short sighted on this. Compeition is vital to a successful economy.

Broadband should NOT become a tax in the future.
Who do you think pays for the electricity and infrastructure that will be used?
It clearly states "maintained without taxpayer dollars"
