Provisioning without installing Comcast software?

I still lease an older RCA modem from Comcast. I am going to swap it for a newer modem because the power connector is flaky and will shut the modem off if you bump the table that it sits on. When I talked to Comcast they said they will exchange the modem and give me a CD for the installation.
Is there a different way to provision? Its not that I don't trust their software but I don't want their logo all over things like Explorer, Firefox, etc.

You call and have them do it over the phone if they can.

That's what I did when I got my new modem

Just use the software. When I purchased my new modem I was told to just plug it in and follow the instructions on screen. All you have to download is software that will streamline the process after it completed successfully I just uninstalled the software. Just make sure you have your logon information.

You can try calling up. They'll either be able to register it for you over the phone, or they'll have to escalate a ticket off to have it done witha 24-72 hour turnaround. So if the software works you're better off running it and just uninstalling dektop doctor later.

Okay. Sounds like installing the software is no big deal. I just don't like someone installing their branding all over the place. There seems to be enough junky advertising.

Over The phone or at the office that you pick up the modem from all they have to do since you are a current customer with an active account is change the modems Mac number on your account.

I have had it done a few times in the past year our two. A defective drop dead modem and also one time they accidentally deleted my Mac number and the label on the modem with the Mac# was worn out so I had to get a new modem and the office I picked it up from just entered the new Mac# and when I got home it worked just by connecting it up.

i say they are full of shit. that garbage is not needed for the modem to be active. how many of you have let the cable bill slide and comcast does a "soft disconnect" (all digital cable boxes and modems get electronically turned off) and when you get home it takes you to that download software page? then after you pay the bill the modem is back on and you did not have to dload crap? yes it can be done, they just want you to install that spyware shit they call desktop doctor so they can spy on you with alot more ease.

Re: Provisioning without installing Comcast software?

You're absolutely right rob, the cd is not necessary for the modem to be active. However getting it registered either via cd or over the phone IS necessary for the provisioing system to flag the modem as being allowed to acquire the proper bootfile.
As c0rd pointed out, not paying your bill doesn't unprovision your modem which is why you don't have to run it. But at some point the modem needs to be provisioned first. But thank you for the...rather colourful...explanation of the provisioning system that you're unfamiliar with.

Last time i had to run an install CD, it did not install any form of branding or standalone apps.

It simply registered my modem.

At least in my area, they dont seem to do the "ie branding" anymore.

tell the phone op you have a mac so you cant run the install cd. theyll ask for the mac address of the modem, add it and hopefully stay on till youre up and running.

Re: Provisioning without installing Comcast software?

Rob - when you don't pay your bill what happens is your modem is just disabled not unregistered when you deciede to pay your bill then the non pay disco w/o is cancelled and your modem is active again . Its not repovisioned.

If you already have comcast service the cd does not install any software all it does is provision the modem. It one installs stuff you you are creating a new account.
