| reply to ropeguru I think the small # of people using FWD says it all. After all how many people in the "real world" are smart enough or want to go through the hassle of setting up a soft-phone with FWD? Do I hear Skype |

| reply to 44402812 I use FWD on my Asterisks server because of the Sipbroker PSTN gateway. It is also see it as an easy way to connect between some boxes, etc., as online dating service. Forget it.
I think Jeff would do better creating a service like Voxalot that would people register multiple VOIP accounts through it, or creating a system to permit people to share DIDs. For example, I just cut a deal with a friend giving him shared use of my DID in Country X for similar use of his DID in Country Y. |

Yeah he has made so good contributions but he was to much of a thought machine to figure in reliability + cheap phone rates + ease of use = millions of users |

| reply to ropeguru Do you guys really think that freeworlddialup is the only venture/company that Pulver owns/runs/makes money from? I don't know in particular any for profit companies that he's involved in, but a "brother has to eat." He's not just doing this out of the goodness of his heart. As long as freeworlddialup has been around I am sure Jeff has figured out many ways to make money - alot of it.
I believe Jeff has done a great job with freeworlddialup and I use his services alot and they save me and my family alot of money per year. Alot of people "rolling their own phone line" over the internet use freeworlddialup too; maybe not as their pots line, but to make remote connections (when you don't wanna run your own pbx for example). |

1 edit | reply to ropeguru fwd web dialer is really a good feature
if you have a fwd phone at home, tell your friends the url for the fwd webdialer »account.fwdnet.net/fwdtalk/?user···uiltin=1 then your friend can call you anywhere within a browser for free. need not to install a softphone. you can put this link on your webpage or blog
or if you have a voip phone with other services. you also can do the same thing with some peering prefix found here »www.freeworlddialup.com/learnmor···#peering
even some other voip service not listed in this table, I have a broadvoice phone, it is not included here, but I found its peering prefix listed at sipbroker »www.sipbroker.com/sipbroker/acti···itePages so, I can call my home bv phone like: **282-xxx-xxx-xxxx

3 edits | Free World Dial was my first sucessful experience with VOIP. I had tried net2voice before, but the connection was never that good. My best friend lives in London and I lived in the US. This was just before the massive price reduction in Trans Atlantic calls. We both bought a Cisco ATA 186 talked for tons of hours. It was impossible at the time to believe the calls were truly free.
Afterwards, I bought a Vonage box in 2003 and used it for work. I had moved my office from one town to the next and wanted to keep my old number. Ma Bell's way was just costing too much.
I built an Asterisk box around that time, but it it was down more than it was up to be honest. Free World Dial and a PAYG Voice Pulse account allowed me to play around , but the box wasn't read for prime time until this year thank.
I just cancelled Vonage a couple of months ago in favor of Viatalk. While I still have my Free World Dial account, it is an old sort of like a a well loved older farm dog who now lays on he porch sopping up the sun. You are glad to have the dog around for the memories and the friendship, but the utility is definitely not what it used to be. |
