[Info] Unable to flash D-Link router solution

I was recently having a ton of problems with flashing the newest (3.52) firmware on my dlink 604 rev E router. Come to find out, I had flashed it with the VDI-604 firmware (Verizon FIOS special firmware).

Everytime I went to upgrade the firmware is would say sometime along the lines of wrong version number, incompatible, etc) My router said it was running 1.10DDM from Sept 05.

Anyhow, the solution is to "crash" your router. When you do this the router will boot into a firmware update only mode. From here I was able to install the latest firmware without a hitch. You have to hold down the reset button until the lights go out, 10-20 seconds. At the same time, you need to pull and plugin the power cord. It may take a few tries, but it works like a charm.

Can anyone else confirm this on the other models of Dlink routers?

What you are describing is the Crash Recovery feature listed in D-Link's knowledgebase:

Crash Recovery Print
If you are experiencing router reboots, try using the crash recovery method and reflashing an earlier firmware. Download the firmware you wish to use from »support.dlink.com/downloads. To crash recover:

Step 1 Unplug the power from the router. Hold in the reset button and plug the power back in. Continue holding for 10 seconds and then release.

Step 2 Statically assign an IP address to your computer in the same IP subnet range: 192.168.0.x where x is any number between 2 and 254. Your Subnet Mask should be 255.255.255.0.

Step 3 Open Internet Explorer and browse to 192.168.0.1. You should see the crash recovery page. Browse to the location of the firmware on your hard-drive and click the send button.

Your router should now be stable and ready to configure.

Almost all of D-Link's routers support this feature although the steps may be different for a handful of them.

I've got a DI-624 verD1. It had been working well for 2 months. Now I've got the same problem. Not able to flash the router. I've read and tried all that has been suggested. When accessing the router through the browser it comes up to the Firmware Upgrade page. In the process of installing the update the router locks up - reboots. It doesn't get to finish the firmware flash. How do I get around the upgrade?
