Sandboxes - privacy Yes security ?

Application Sandboxes

Description: Having discussed heavy weight" virtualization technology in recent weeks, this week Steve and Leo examine lighter weight" application sandboxing technology and the software solutions currently available to perform this form of application wrapping." They discuss the inherent limitations of sandbox security and explain how valuable sandboxes can be for privacy enforcement.

Hey thanx Spanner, that was a good read. I had little doubt you were referring to Sandboxie. What a nice little program it's become and still free, how kewel. But like most recommendations on this forum it's probably best to use it as part of your layered security approach and don't try to run it without your firewall and AV, well I won't be anyhow.

I've put Sandboxie on my laptop to try it out. Still getting the hang of it, but I've read many good things about it. Thanks for posting more good info.

Steve Gibson doesn't seem to think application sandboxes are very safe. He says that they don't create a true virtual environment but merely intercept and filter calls made on the OS by the sandboxed application. As such they could be circumvented by "nontraditional or undocumented operating system calls that may not be filtered". So, security? No!

As already mentioned above (and what Steve indicated), sandboxing is a good part of a layered approach to security. No one said it should be the ONLY form of security.

So, security? Absolutely...if used correctly.
