Laws on spinning the tires?

Lets say your in a stop and you floor the car all the way which makes your tires spin and all that noise etc but never actually make is past the speed limit (45 MPH most places), does a cop have a reason to stop you?

I've been pulled over here in CA for racing (burnout and all) but I stayed under the speed limit. There's probably some reckless endangerment law about burnouts.

Spinning tires = loss of traction = wreckless driving = If he wants to, he can write you up

In NY there's one called "unsafe start".

I'm sure most places have something that they can ticket you for.

Seems like my friend did that and got a ticket for "Improper operation of a motor vehicle".

Yep. The ticket would be for "exhibition driving".

A friend of mine was ticketed for "excessive acceleration" by the city police a long time ago. Could depend on the municipality though.

Here's a good concrete example of why it's considered unsafe driving:

It all depends on your state. Some places it will get you multiple fines. I know that you can be cited for "Excessive Vehicle Noise" as well as "Reckless Driving". The first is usually reserved for jalopies with no exhaust, but can usually be applied at the officer's discretion.

In California, that's a misdemeanor (exhibition of speed, CA Vehicle Code s. 23109(c)).

Yep, and you don't even need to spin 'em for the ticket. Any loss of traction and even a short chirp can get you a ticket if the cop wants to write you for it.
