[modem/router] DSL Modem/D-Link router problems

DSL connection is OK with modem/ethernet to PC.

This is an office setup, they changed managers, D-link 614+ was in the setup for wireless, but they did not have any password etc. to access the router and were concerned about wireless security to their business setup by the old manager.

Did a reset on the D-Link and lost DSL using the router.

Called verizon went through the D-Link setup wizard clicked through all screens, setup seemed to be OK, (will change passwords and security afterwards), but D-link would not finish the setup, just hangs.

Any thoughts before I get in a Verizon/D-Link Loop?

Thanks
Bob

Where's it located?
Is it business (DHCP) service or residential?

Phone line to Verizon Westell Modem/ ethernet from modem to D-Link router/ router to netgear hub and then back to PC.

There is also a second PC that connects to this setup for internet by ethernet.

Everything was OK, until the D-link reset, it will not find the verizon connection.

Did a hard reset of both modem and router, unplugged both, powered up the modem, waited about 30 seconds, and then powered up the router (verizon suggested this) no luck.

It is a business DHCP service.

Thanks
Bob

Does the modem gain sync?
What model number is it?
If you connect a PC to the modem does it work?

Yes it gains sync.

I am at home now, an going back to their office early in the morning and will post with the model#.

The modem works OK when connected directly to the PC.

There is a huge tangle of ehternet cables and two hubs, behind the desk, but I don't thing any of this is involved in the problem.

As the owner said "the previous manage could not keep things simple, he wanted it so complicated that no one could figure it out." LOL

I have had a little experience setting up my wireless dialup LAN at home, but that is it.

Thanks

I assume that it's not static IPs business service, but dynamic IP service.

OK, I don't know what the HUB is for, except more ports, but here's what I think you have.

When you use a separate router, you should bridge the modem (2200, 6100, 327W). Dynamic DHCP is most likely MAC address bound. When you change the modem from Routed Bridge Mode to Bridge Mode and turn off the DHCP server, the 614 won't be able to get an IP, since the Westell's MAC is what is recognized.

You can shut it down overnight (at least 2 hours) to expire the IP lease, so the 614 can get an IP. Most likely, what was done was to clone the MAC address from the Westell into the 614 so it could connect immediately.

The problem: when you hard reset the 614 it's MAC changes back to it's default. No connection. When you hard reset the Westell it returns to it's default of Routed Bridge. The 614 should accept this, but the setup may hang because you're double nating and both DHCP servers are running.

Guessing that you don't want a business connection down longer than necessary, you'll want to do this. Locate the MAC address in the modem and write it down. Bridge the modem => Edit the VC so that Protocol = Bridge, Mode = Bridge. Disable the DHCP server (Private LAN). Clone the MAC address from the Westell into the DLink. Verify that it gets the Public IP (WAN status page), then finish the setup.

Here's a link on a walkthrough of the process: »members.verizon.net/~res08lyg/6100.htm

Should you want to get the DLink back to it's own MAC address, for simplicity's sake, in the future; pick a time the connection can be shut down overnight. Turn off the modem, do a hard reset on the DLink, shut down the DLink. When you turn them on in the morning it should be fine, but you will have to do the setup for the wireless etc again, as the hard reset will wipe it out. May be possible to save that config as a file, and just reload it, I'm not sure. You would now have the same setup but the DLink would be using it's own MAC address.

Thank you very much for spending this time with me.

I will be going into their office in the morning, will give this a go, and get back to you later in the day.

The 614 was shut down before I left yesterday.

Just got home, and got it working. Never could access the Westell modem Model B90-210015-04 Rev. C

However after powering up the D-Link and using the setup wizard, got to "clone the MAC address", clicked it, got everything finished and now wireless and DSL all working.

Going to do a bit of Google now and get the info on the 2100 mode.

Would not have had a clue as to where to start without your input.

Thanks again
Bob

2100 is not a combo modem/router. That's why I didn't list it. It's bridge only, so it has no changeable settings.

You apparently cloned the PC's NIC MAC address. If the router was shut down over night and no PCs were connected to the modem, I would have expected the 614 to pull an address when turned on, so you must have left the PC that you cloned from, hooked to the modem .

Glad you got it working.

I may be in over my capability level here.
Both office PC's have DSL internet access, however there is an apartment upstairs, and they were sharing the Dlink 614 wireless LAN.

I just got a call from my friend at the office, and the apartment does not have DSL access from the router.

You are correct, I shut down power to the router overnight, but the modem was left connected to the PC.

I assume since I cloned the MAC address of the PC NIC and not the modem, both office PC's have connection because they are connected by ethernet, but since the modem MAC address was not cloned to the router, no wireless access.

I will have them shut down power to the router, and have them remove the ethernet cable from modem to the PC tonight.

I assume that then in the morning, I should be able to get the Mac address of the modem during the Dlink setup?

I will take my laptop with me in the morning and see if I can get a wireless connection to the router.

And I thought setting up a dialup network was difficult. LOL

A good workout for a senior citizen.

Thanks again
Bob

Check to see if they had security (WEP or WAP) on the wireless. Once you have the wireless up, it's up to them to configure theirs to get it. If you use WEP or WAP security, you'll have to give them the Pre Shared Key you create while setting up the wireless.

2100 is not a combo modem/router (like the 2200, 6100, 327W). It's a modem only, thus it has no MAC address.

Before you connect the DLink to the 2100, you can do a hard reset with the button on the back. It will default back to it's own MAC address. Because it's off over night, It should connect with it's own MAC, if you do the reset before connecting it. You will have to set up the wireless again. then they will have to find the connection from the PC upstairs.

I think I finally have it.

I downloaded the manual for the DLink so I guess I am ready to go.

I will post the results when I get back home in the morning, or even better when I get on-line with my laptop at the office.

Thank you for patience.
Bob

That's what we want to hear. And it's no longer a secret how it was done, or without a known password.

Isn't school fun!!!
