Call me paranoid, but I've never been willing to leave a mic (or camera) plugged in for this very reason -- that some hacker and/or malware might turn them on and be listening (and/or watching) at any time without my knowledge.

So far, pulling the plug is pretty hard to beat.
Be kind of hard to do on a laptop.
That's what tape and farts are for.
