| [ViaTalk] Voice mail - Network Down Forward interaction
I am having a problem and have had a ticket open for almost 3 weeks with little help and I was wondering if anyone else sees the same issue.
I have Network Down Forward set to call my cell phone. If I disable my network to test it out, my cell phone rings, but when my 'Ring Seconds' expires, rather than going to Voice Mail, I either get an error message to the caller or the line goes dead.
The only way to avoid this (other than turning off Network Down Forward) is to set a long enough Ring Seconds value that my Cell Phone Voice Mail answers the call. |

| Hmm.. this does seem like a big problem...
I haven't tried this...
I would have thought that with network down forward, turned on.. and your PAP disconnected, that your calls would never go to Viatalk vmail. That the ring setting would be irrelevent. Your call would just keep ringing your cell phone until it answered. I guess I was wrong.
Certainly, the error message isn't something that is good. |

| At some level, I'm not surprised at this, myself. When I first got my ViaTalk line, I connected it to my home wiring and forwarded my CallVantage line to the VT line. Because the "ring seconds" setting on my ViaTalk line was longer than that for my CallVantage line, the CallVantage voicemail intercepted the call before the ViaTalk voicemail did. Granted, I doubt AT&T and ViaTalk use the same system backbone (asterisk), but the AT&T switch still had some control over the call with forwarding enabled. It appears that the ViaTalk system works the same way. Given that forwarded calls count against plan minutes with most providers, I guess it isn't all that surprising, as well. |

That the ring setting would be irrelevent. Your call would just keep ringing your cell phone until it answered. I guess I was wrong. I really wouldn't care either way. Either go to Via Talk voice-mail or ignore my 'Ring Seconds' setting and just let the line where the call was forwarded handle the call treatment.
The net effect is that a hiccup in my home network, ISP or home power will make it so the Network Down Forward is only good if I am able to answer the call on the line the call was sent to.
I don't want to increase my Ring Seconds as people will hang up rather than wait for VM. I don't want to turn off Network Down Forward so I am reachable in those cases.
Has anyone else tried this? It is simple to do. Just call your line with your adaptor unplugged and vary the ring seconds setting to be shorter and longer than the time your forwarded line will answer to voice-mail. |
