[News] Who has the longest retention?

I use Giganews and they do OK but sometimes I miss large binaries.

Wondering who has the longest retention?

Thanks All!

Thanks for the info.
I'd never heard of ngroups.net before.

Think I'll try the two day test and see how it looks.

The best retention is from Giganews and it has 70 days plus.

Seems as if Newshosting is gearing up for 70 Days as well (for $5 more). Support won't say if/when this might be going live. Might be just a test for all I know. Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Impressive.

$19.95/month for 70 days retention, 8 connections, and unlimited downloads.

I am prety sure the longest retention available is still with newsfeeds.com however they do not have monthly unlimited plans. I am about 99% sure they have retention of around 90 days.

Giganews.com and ngroups.net has about 70 days retention and sells unlimited accounts.

Usenet-news.net has about 70 days retention and sells block accounts.

I have used giganews and newshosting extensively over the past few months. Giganews had routing issues so I had to switch. I switched back due to the awful completion I was getting on newshosting. They have the same retention except giganews is much more complete.

Not had time to test any others yet but I did notice that in one particular binary group that I'm only seeing about 30 days retention from giganews.

Can anyone else not using giganews see how far they can go back in alt.binaries.radio-scanner?
I can make it to 8/8/2006 at 6:41 AM for the oldest.

Not the most popular of groups

I kinda recall contacting giganews about some groups not having the promised retention time and getting a response back that some non-popular groups may have less retention.
If this is the case than giganews is not for me and the stated retention is misleading as well.

I frequent less popular tech type groups and it is these types I'm looking for long retention.

If anyone can test their news-server for the group I listed above and let me know the retention shown, I'd appreciate it

Re: [News] Who has the longest retention?

With NH I get 6 posts in that particular group over 40 days with the oldest being 45.1 days (although they are mostly spam ).

That is odd.
I setup a NH account and see only 8 posts in that group and the oldest is only 20 days or dated 8/21/2006.

Only 1 is spam!

Now compared to giganews, giganews goes back to 8/8/06 or 33 days. Giganews also has 1041 posts for that group.

What is the date on the oldest post you see and can you actually read the message or is it just cached in your reader with headers only?

I wonder why the big difference with NH comparing what I see to what you see?

Thanks!

"Date: Thu, 27 Jul 2006 07:43:00 GMT"..is from the header on the oldest post I get in there, and yup I can open up the post and read it. It's a paypal scam spam message.

Not sure which newsclient you are using, but try purging the group cache for a.b.r-s and try downloading the headers again.

This is odd then.

I've tried Newsbin as well as Outlook Express.
Both have the same exact results for me

even after a purge.

Oh well.

Re: [News] Who has the longest retention?

Well thanks for testing it for me.
Maybe someone else will come along and try the same.
Curious to see others results and maybe someone else will know the answer why our results were so different

Using N-Groups, I see about 1,135 headers, oldest being 33 days. N Groups claims 71 days retention on binaries.

What gives ANON?

I mentioned in my earlier post that this was NOT a popular group.

I only wanted to compare retention for this group before I plunk down cash in order to try a different news host.

Would you subscribe to each news provider in order to find out who may have the longest retention?
I doubt it as most charge a minimum of one month to try it.

Many here have subscriptions to a variety of providers and I see no harm in asking what the retention looks like for a single group.

I know what Giganews looks like as I've used them for a few years now.

And I'm most certainly not bitching and was only asking a legitimate question.

So, bug out ANON.

@cox.net

People please learn more about newsgroups before complaining. The reason alt.binaries.radio-scanner doesn't have the same retention as other popular groups is because its not that popular of a group. This is the case with all newsgroup providers with non popular groups.

The more retention goes up for the popular groups the more retention goes up for the non popular groups as well.

Well lets give an award to the annonymous Captain Obvious. I don't think anyone was complaining. Someone simply asked what the posts were like in that particular group on different providers.
