Re: [XP] Lynksys router BEFSR41 PPOE problem

Hi Eyespye, I use Eastlink (far better )

Here is the scoop, the modem Aliant gives you, talks to and authenticates with the PPoe Settings in the router.

Procedure (lets ignore the internet and modem for now) and unplug the WAN port of the router but keep the ethernet cables from the PCs attached to the router. Power down the modem at this point.

OKay at one of the PCs, ensure you uninstall all that high speed connection manager crap.

There are two ways to go about getting your computer to talk to the router (ie get assigned an IP address by the router)

The easy way, is via Network connections (I right click on the internet connection boxes in the right hand bottome system tray and then hit status and REPAIR) If that does not work (resets IPs) then rebooting your computer often works as well.

The alternate way (that I always use successfully)
Assuming your using XP at one of the computers,
Go START RUN and then type in CMD
YOu should have a black DOS box pop up.

Type in: ipconfig /release *Con*
and when the response comes back (all zeros)
type in: ipconfig /renew

Now you should have your PC associate (get an IP address) from the router.

Enter the router with the given username and password.
FIrst thing change your password to a minimum 8 random characters (and write it down). Next enter in your pppoe settings as though you were at a PC.

Next ensure all your PCs talk to the Router.
Its fun to use the same CMD rule and then type the LANIP address of the router as follows: ping 192.168.x.x etc....
if you have a connection it should come back --
