secure page but not basic - possible DNS problem

OK - I'm connecting to a UK ISP (TalkTalk) through a Linksys modem-router and there are 3 computers connected. One through a cable and 2 wirelessly.

On all three PC's I can ping an internet server (195.112.4.4 - Nildram's DSN server, I believe) and get email but not a web page.

I have tried puting the DNS information directly into the properties of the TCP/IP of the individual PC, and also tried telling them to get their DNS info from the router, which has been told to get it automatically from the ISP. In both cases I get the same DNS server I.P. which I have double checked is the correct one for the ISP (TalkTalk - uk ISP).

In a final bizare twist today I found I could connect to my home-banking srvice ( a secure page) but not Google or any other similar basic page.

Any suggestions for things to try please?

Re: secure page but not basic - possible DNS problem

This is, indeed, strange. Can you ping google.com?
What about using Google's IP address (72.14.207.99)? Can you open Google.com by typing their IP address into IE rather than the domain name?

Have you checked your MTU settings to make sure they're appropriate for your connection type (should be 1500 for most connections, or 1492 if using ADSL with PPPoE).

Is Internet Explorer configured correctly to connect through your LAN? Is your default gateway set correctly? The default gateway on your computers should be the LAN IP address of your router, the default gateway on the router should be provided by your ISP via DHCP or PPPoE).

Do you, by any chance, have access restrictions enabled on your router?

Those are all my guesses...
