Re: vonage linksys wrt54g choppy calls

It could be that something is using the bandwidth besides the VoIP connection. Try going into the WRT54G and enabling QOS using the MAC address of the VoIP adapter. Log in to the WRT54G, Go to Applications & Gaming | QoS | Device Priority. Enter a device name like "Vonage", set to highest priority and enter the MAC address of the Vonage adapter. This can be found on a sticker on the unit. It is a 12 digit hex number.
This test will give you a quick and dirty check if the problem is caused by something else using the upload bandwidth. If this fixes the problem, you need to investigate what is using the upstream bandwidth and take what ever actions are necessary.

As I am sure you are aware, for most consumer broadband connections, the upstream bandwidth is much less than the download bandwidth. If the "other person" is complaining about audio quality, it is, of course, an upstream problem.

Another possibility is if you are using a 2.4 Ghz cordless phone that a wireless (WiFi or other device) could be stepping on the channel of the phone causing interference. Try using a hard wired phone to make a call and see if it is any better.

A good place to test your connection is at »www.testyourvoip.com/index.html which gives a test of a simulated call and reports back a numerical "score" identifying problems.

So it looks like that is the first thing you need to fix. If there is a problem with your router you can't expect the things that depend on it to work smoothly. You should use a wired connection when changing the router settings. If that doesn't work try to reset it. If that doesn't work you may have to try a looooong reset of the router, which will lose all your settings (if any). Disconnect the router from the Internet when you do that, and immediately after the long reset go in and set a strong admin password for the router. Then apply your other settings. First secure the wireless connection with encryption, then reconnect to the Internet and check that that works, then go and tweak your QOS.

Sounds like the router is having "issues" which may be the root of the problem.

Have you tried to power cycle it off/on?

Does it have the latest firmware? If not go to the linksys site and download the latest for your router's version.

If you know how to re-setup the configuration, press and hold the reset button on the back for about 15 seconds while it is powered up. This will put it back to it's factory settings. To get in to re-configure it, browse to 192.168.1.1

Do you mean, you have not been able to get control of your router? Are you using a wired connection to the router?

If it is still under warranty call for a RMA and replacement. Otherwise see the Linksys forum for more expert help.
