[Bellsouth DSL][Zoom] Stalls/Freezes, Large downloads freeze

I recently had a nice experience with a thunderstorm, which fried one of my PCs and dsl modem. I have Bellsouth DSL service. So I took care of the PC and got a new DSL modem: a Zoom X5 (Model 5654). After installing the modem and some messing around the settings, I finally managed to set it up and had internet access. Unfortunately, it took "5 clicks to surf." I google'd my way here, and employed a few tips listed.

Eventually, I re-tried my Bellsouth installation CD. The page said that since my modem wasn't supported by them, I should "configure my modem software to the following settings: VPI/VCI = 8/35, 1483 Driver Set/PPPoE." I reset my modem to default settings, changed the setup mode to Manual and changed the settings to:

Current Connection: Enabled
Encapsulation: PPPoE LLC [The options are: PPPoA VC-Mux, PPPoA LLC, PPPoE VC-Mux, PPPoE LLC, 1483 Routed IP VC-Mux, 1483 Routed IP LLC, 1483 Routed IP LLC(1577), 1483 Bridged IP VC-Mux, 1483 Bridged IP LLC]
VPI: 8
VCI: 35
Virtual Circuit: 0

I entered my username and password along those settings, saved them, and edited my TCP/IP properties to not obtain the IP address automatically but use the settings that it was currently using, which are:

IP: 10.0.0.4
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 10.0.0.2
Preferred DNS Server: 10.0.0.2

I rebooted and the internet is working reasonably well (better than the previous form anyway). Except I still can't download any large files, as the downloads usually freeze at %50-%75 (I reckon I can download files up to 15MB w/o a stall/freeze). This isn't a browser issue, as I tried different ones. I also can't stay connected on IRC, which I'm assuming proves that there are stalling issues (I can access webpages fine now, haven't experienced a stall in that part). I'm using Windows Media Center 2005, but am dual booting with a linux distro if there is something that I could test on unix. I also have a Linksys router, but using that between the modem and the PC hasn't been particularly fruitful. At this point I'm beyond frustrated, so I'm sorry if I listed any unnecessary info, or wrote way too much, I just want to get this over with Thanks in advance!

PS: Using the Automatic configuration on the modem assigned PPPoA, and required the "5 clicks to surf(tm)." And the downloads naturally were even worse.

I'm getting frequent timeouts. The connection drops for no reason at all. The only fix I could find on this site was to not get the IP automatically, is there anything else I can do?

I ran a diagnostics test from the modem's interface, and these were the results:

Diagnostics
This page is used for performing diagnostics on the system.
WAN Interface: ppp-0
Testing Connectivity to modem
Testing Ethernet connection PASS Help
Testing ADSL line for sync PASS Help
Testing Ethernet connection to ATM PASS Help
Testing Telco Connectivity

So I'm assuming the FAIL/SKIPPED parts is where the problem is?

Re: [Bellsouth DSL][Zoom] Stalls/Freezes, Large downloads freeze

Your ISP IP is wrong. when you are adding the Info under manual install 10.0.0.2 is not right should be what ever the static ip is that bellsouth gave you. If it is not static then you will need bellsouths DNS primary and secondary. That will give you a dynamic IP. Set it to auto for getting ISP IP.
