Need help with transferring video from JVC to Pc Via USB

Okay about 2 years ago i purchased a mini-dv camcorder from Pc-Richards. I tried to connect to my windows xp machine but it wont get recognized. The drivers that came with the device do not work. It has a mini usb connector. I tried searching all the seach engines known to man and no good hits so far. I have been told when it comes to video i should have bought a mac but i have a pc and would like to know if there is a solution. I currently use the A/V cable to record to standalone DVR receiver then pop the DVR into the computer. Its a hassle. The model number is GR-D295U

Thanks

Does that camcorder have Firewire?

USB is used for streaming video, and is not very good for downloading what's already captured on tape.

When you say "dv" connector I know it stands for "digital video", but does that mean Firewire?

If so, or it's something similar, that's the only way to go to get the best quality.

Dunno whether I can help but here's a shot. Let's clarify first. GR-D295U I didn't find exactly on the JVC site, but I'll assume it is GR-D295US. Its product page is »www.jvc.com/product.jsp?modelId=···ive=true ; manual here (PDF). It is the type that encodes the video and audio to DV on tape as it is capturing, then can send analog to a VCR or TV or DV to a computer. For the latter it uses what they call a "DV cable" which is really Firewire (a.k.a. IEEE 1394).

For DV capture in XP - it's called "capturing" though it is really just transferring - most people use a program like one of the Adobe video applications. There are a bunch of apps in this category (I use Ulead Video Studio because it is more compatible and cheaper than Adobe). This is better than going directly to a recorder, because you can do editing and/or filtering before compressing to a final codec/format such as MPEG or DivX.

You post implies that you have tried using software that was supplied with the camcorder and this is not working.

Next step is finding out whether it's a hardware or software problem. If the camcorder can transfer by Firewire to any device successfully, the hardware is OK and your problem is software. If it can't send DV to any other device it's a probably a hardware problem.

* Can you try it with a Mac, or with any device that's designed to take DV input by Firewire, other than this PC?

* Did it formerly work with Windows and no longer does? In this case it's probably a software issue and might be fixable by reinstalling.

* Can you try with software other than the JVC software? DV apps are $100 plus, but there may be a trial version or one you already have that can be used to confirm whether it can work.

Quick answer, I have JVC camcorder, and you CAN'T use USB to transfer video, it can only be used to transfer files from SD card, which I don't recommend. Get Firewire, works awesome.

I bought a firewire cable to transfer video from the tape in my digital camera to my PC but there's no where to plug in the firewire cable. All the plug-in spots on the camera are way too small. Any ideas?

You likely need to add a Firewire/IEEE 1394 card. They are not overly expensive. You will also need appropriate software, which your camera may have shipped with.

What type of firewire cable did you buy? The DV port on your camera is probably 4-pin firewire, so you'll need a 4-pin to 6-pin cable.
