Wierd issue with my IP

I have an issue with disconnections in mIRC, and I think it might be related to a wierd phenomenon with my IP/hostname.

My IP is 24.22.27.182. I'm in Oregon, so my hostname is c-24-22-27-182.hsd1.or.comcast.net. However, sometimes I get disconnected from IRC and when I get back, I find that my IP is still the same, but mIRC is reporting my hostname as c-24-22-27-182.hsd1.mn.comcast.net. Later I'll get disconnected again, and it will be back to ....or.comcast.net. Running a "host" command on my Linux box shows this:

sohcahtoa@Linuxbox:~$ host 24.22.27.182
182.27.22.24.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer c-24-22-27-182.hsd1.mn.comcast.net.
182.27.22.24.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer c-24-22-27-182.hsd1.or.comcast.net.

Its as if my IP belongs to both Oregon and Minnesota.

Is this normal? Is this what's causing my disconnections in IRC?

Running a "host" command on my Linux box shows something similar to this:

quote:
sohcahtoa@Linuxbox:~$ host 24.12.34.56
56.34.12.24.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer c-24-12-34-56.hsd1.mn.comcast.net.
56.34.12.24.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer c-24-12-34-56.hsd1.or.comcast.net.

Interesting, I get this result:

56.34.12.24.in-addr.arpa. 21481 IN PTR c-24-12-34-56.hsd1.in.comcast.net.

Looks like Comcast may be doing some DNS record "updating". I would think that mIRC would simply lock onto your IP address, rather than the PTR name (especially since not all IP addresses even have a PTR record), but I am not an mIRC expert.

heh. I wasn't using my real IP. I just changed the copy/paste result into my post. I just didn't want to post my real IP. The fact that 24.12.34.56 was a real used IP was just a coincidence.

Posting your IP address is not really a security risk, and masking it also complicates the task for others who may actually be foolish enough to attempt to diagnose your problem.

Want to know mine? They are 68.52.56.110 and 66.134.0.234.

try sending an email to dnsadmin@cable.comcast.net and ask them to have a look at it.

I have the same problem. I live in Washington state in Seattle area and my host is change with mn every 2 seconds. 2 seconds is with WA and 2 seconds with MN. But i don't have problem with IRC disconnects. I stay there 2-3 days without disconnect

agreed. same "problem" here in new york with MA and NY hostnames, however it has no effect on connections timing out..

alright alright.

My IP is 24.22.27.182. The Linux host command produces as follows:

sohcahtoa@Linuxbox:~$ host 24.22.27.182
182.27.22.24.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer c-24-22-27-182.hsd1.mn.comcast.net.
182.27.22.24.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer c-24-22-27-182.hsd1.or.comcast.net.

I'll edit my original post to make this clarification.

Also, it really seems to be only IRC that disconnects. I get random disconnections from World of Warcraft, but they don't happen often, and they don't coincide with my disconnections from IRC. Also, my roommate will sometimes get disconnected from WoW as well, but it won't be at the same time I do, so I am now really doubting that my IRC disconnections have anything to do with the hostname problem.
