New WRT54GL Firmware - Tomato

I've been trying different firmware for the WRT54GL to take advantage of its QOS for VOIP. I started with HyperWRT-Thibor, then DD-WRT, and now I'm trying Tomato »www.polarcloud.com/tomato . So far I'm liking Tomato the best. I've only made a few VOIP test calls while downloading and/or online gaming, but so far QOS via MAC Addresses seems to be working fine with it.

It has nice bandwidth monitor and QOS monitoring features..

Bandwidth Monitor

Here are the rest of the screenshots of it..

I just wanted to post it here so if anyone else tries it with VOIP we can discuss our experiences.

I am pretty happy with DDWRT v23 SP1 on my WRT54GS v3. I have QoS enabled per protocols and don't have problem with VoIP while serving emule and download Linux kernel (for testing purposes).

From what I see through the ugly GUI screen shots of tomato (let alone the weird name), I prefer to stay with DDWRT that has been working nicely and/or flawlessly on my router, YMMV.

EDIT: Now I have upgraded my router with DDWRT V23 SP2 and am more happy with it.

DD-WRT was working fine for me too. And I thought the same thing about Tomato before I tried it.. strange name and the GUI seemed blah. But after using it, I actually like the GUI better than DD-WRT. Tomato GUI uses javascript and ajax, its nice a quick. I was more curious than anything and just wanted to try it out. So far I don't regret it.

From reading the Tomato site and the readme in the download of the firmware, it doesn't look like it. It's only for

Requires: WRT54G v2-v4, WRT54GS v1-v4, WRT54GL v1. This is not for v5 or newer G/GS routers. Warning: There seems to be a problem with WRT54G v1 routers - do not use with a v1.

G\code.bin is for WRT54G v1-4 and WRT54GL. GS\code.bin is for WRT54GS v1-3. GSv4\code.bin is for WRT54GS v4.

I have wondered why someone would use an IP phone/softphone/ATA to connect to a router serving voip when the device used can do the same thing. Is it the ability to have each device being an extension using the same account? What other benefits are there?

Are you asking why someone would use an ATA (like the PAP2) with a Router that is also an ATA (like the WRTP54G)? If so, that's not what I'm doing. The WRT54G I'm using is only a router, not an ATA as well, so I have my separate PAP2 connected to it.

I am glad you mentioned this because I try to stay away from Java!

I believe our discussion on the topic in this thread is way OT by now. We don't even talk about the QoS features of Tomato firmware which I believe is the subject. Perhaps, it will be better for the Mods to move this thread to other forum. Just a suggestion.

Yes, Tofu.

New WRT54xx series Firmware project: Tomato
It's worth mentioning that there is a new WRT54G/GS/GL firmware project starting up. Some of you may already be familiar with the work from tofu on the HyperWRT firmware. Yep, he’s back and at it again, this time with a zesty Tomato flavor for you. Derived from his previous HyperWRT work, Linksys' WRT54GL 4.30.7 and WRT54GS 4.70.1 sources. This firmware is chock full of goodies for both the novice and self proclaimed SOHO admins.

Firmware features:

* New GUI uses Ajax and SVG
* BusyBox v1.2.1
* dnsmasq version 2.33
* iptables v1.3.5
* WOL
* Advanced QoS: 10 unique QoS classes defined, pie graph display of priroitized traffic which contains hyperlinks to view class details
* Bandwidth graphing: Current, Daily, Monthly
* Wireless modes: Access Point, Access Point+WDS, Wireless client, Wireless ethernet bridge, WDS
* DDNS service: ezUpdate v3.0.11b7 added and services extended for more providers (DynDNS, DyNS, EasyDNS, ieServer.net, namecheap, ODS, TZO & ZoneEdit)
* Syslog is now viewable through the interface (also downloadable)
* Customizable Conntrack / Netfilter settings
* SES Button control
* JFFS2
* CIFS client
* many more...

I miss read your original post. I thought you were using voip within the router, like the voip FW at dd-wrt where Sip@H is used. This seems like a mini asterisk on the WRT54G but I've never seen anyone talk much about it.

The VoIP package on DDWRT is based on SIP Express Router (SER), IIRC.
