3 edits | iPod *Gapless Playback? Ok so I've been waiting for this for a LONG time now. My iPod is already with the new update, however I've yet to see that "gapless" feature. How does it exactly work? most of my songs play the same as before(with a regular gap). Ive only seen it work with the new Hoobastank CD and very few other songs(there's still a gap, but a very small one...i guess its normal because of the iPod HD limitation). Does it only work with some albums? isnt it supposed to be with all the songs?.....maybe im confusing gapless playback with the crossfade effect of iTunes, somebody explain me how its supposed to sound im confused -- My Current Desktop! //Post= 3381 |

ThinkdiffPremium,MVM join:2001-08-07 Bronx, NY kudos:4 2 edits | Sure, the update does. The update is for Games and "Bug fixes". Not gapless playback. Read the notes. I can't seem to find them now, but when iTunes 7 downloaded the updated iPod software, the notes said nothing about Gapless. I believe that's a new feature for new iPods.
edit: just tried it with my iPod, still has gaps. And I tried it in iTunes as well. Had a gap, even after manually setting it to "Gapless Album". very weird.
Ok, now it's working in iTunes, set the album to gapless on the iPod and it still has gaps. very short, but it's still a gap. -- University of Southern California - Class of 2010. Fight On! |

LOL you dont need a new iPod just to get gapless playback, the feature is backwards compatible with the 5g and so is the fast scrolling bigger letter thing...just not the new search option, that'll be going to the 6g iPod. I didnt know the setting had to be turned on ( see image ) i though it was automatic so it should work now. -- My Current Desktop! //Post= 3381 |

jwsmiths4Part Man, Part MacPremium join:2003-10-25 Savannah, GA | reply to MicrotoastXP Yeah the gapless playback works on all iPods. Works on my current 5G. iTunes has a database I believe of all the albums that are designed without gaps between songs. If your album isn't on that database you can still make it gapless by selecting the songs from the album, 'Get Info', and then put "Yes" under the gapless option -- »web.mac.com/jwsmiths/iWeb |

I saw Anti-Flat in concert when I was 15 (along with Teen Idol, A New Found Glory and Less Than Jake up in Atlanta) - I really didn't like them, but that was mostly because of this one song that had the lyrics "You're gonna die for your government die die die." -- »web.mac.com/jwsmiths/iWeb |

 | reply to jwsmiths4 Doesn't work on my 2g mini. I changed an album that should be gapless to gapless that was already on my iPod. Plugged in my iPod and iTunes said iPod update complete immediately. Played the album on the iPod and the same old giant gap is still there. Also I did not receive an update for my iPod when I started iTunes 7. |

iTunes now has options that enable the long-requested feature called gapless playback. This enables the continuous, uninterrupted playback of certain albums which were meant to be played without the short gaps that iTunes and previous iPods had to place between tracks. Good examples are live concert albums and electronic mixes. Those of you who've tried it, were the albums you're using originally mastered for the music to run continuously from track to track? If not, that may be where you're having "problems".
I haven't downloaded the update yet, but I'm hopeful I'll finally get proper playback of the "concept albums" on my iPod. -- Has anyone ever told you that the configuration and juxtaposition of your features is extraordinarily apposite? |

If not, that may be where you're having "problems". The original mastering shouldn't be an issue - gapless playback is (well, it should be) based on an algorithm to strip padding from the last audio frame past the end of the track (and not add the CD-standard 2 seconds of silence). It should not require file metadata that tells it where the track ends within the last frame, because even though that would be the best "perfect" solution, most legacy files won't have that metadata (and formats may not even support it).
Perhaps it took Apple this long to incorporate gapless playback because they wanted it to be automatic and work seamlessly across legacy and non-iTunes tracks... but in the end they settled on the per-file "flag" because there was no other way around it. Gapless has been available on iPods if you use 3rd party software, and is implemented in a similar way. |

| reply to MicrotoastXP Just FWIW, I listened to Dark Side of the Moon on the way to work this morning on my 5G iPod .... completely gapless.
Sweet.
Finally, the Only Annoyance (tm) I've had with the iPod is gone |

That's one of those "concept albums" I was talking about. I agree - sweet.
Personally, I'm fine with gaps between discrete songs on an album that was originally recorded that way, and although the gapless play in iTunes is fine most of the time, there are songs for which this definitely doesn't work, and I wouldn't necessarily want it for everything on my iPod. (It sounds like there are third-party apps for those that do.) But for listening to an LP like "Dark Side of the Moon" this is a real boon. -- Has anyone ever told you that the configuration and juxtaposition of your features is extraordinarily apposite? |

 | reply to MicrotoastXP I can't get it to work on my Shuffle.
Is there an iPod Update that I'm not seeing?
With DSotM, I selected all the songs, went to Get Info, and selected "Yes" for Gapless Album. Loaded them to the iPod - no go.
I restored the iPod and uploaded the songs again - still not working. Blah. |
|
 | reply to MicrotoastXP Apple you should have done this years ago. I rerecorded many songs that shouldn't have had a gap between them to get around this problem. |

 | reply to MicrotoastXP There needs to be a global switch to turn it on for all playback. iTunes didn't recognize a single album that should be gapless. |
