Howdy,
Thinking of switching over all my services from MTS (Winnipeg) to Shaw. Had some reservations about the phone service, which include echo during LD calls. But more importantly - does Shaw still throttle BitTorrent speeds? |

1 edit | reply to Derfel I'm interested in Winnipeg specifically, but I would assume any throttling would be nation-wide, I guess. What about upload speeds? I know Shaw is much slower than MTS for upload speeds anyways (75-100kbps difference on average), but is BT slow in this way? |

| reply to Derfel Yes, they still throttle BitTorrent.
By using encryption you will be using more CPU resources and possibly limiting your connections to certain peers (result: slower speeds). AzureusWiki has an article about it: »www.azureuswiki.com/index.php/Av···_shaping.
Also, there have been reports that throttling encrypted traffic is real, there's even a company which offers a product that does just that: »www.allot.com/index.php?option=c···temid=18. Not sure if Shaw uses them but there isn't anything that can be done about it right now. |

| i don't know about everybody else but i never had a problem with BT other then up, and i don't care about keeping a raito of 1. i am always able to download off BT at 600KB/s with no problem and i use BitComet, most i can do up is at 60KB
but i heard that they only throttle Upsteam and in certain areas not all of shaw. |

@shawcable.net | reply to Derfel They don't throttle in Kelowna. I regularly get 300KBytes/s on Shaw standard. |

| reply to phoneboy2 They throttle only upload. you should only be concerned if you are required to have a good upload ratio to get great download speeds.
to those that says they are getting great download speeds...well duh..of course you are. they aren't throttling download so that doesn't imply your area isn't being throttled. |

@shawcable.net | reply to Derfel Upload is fine too. What do you have to say to that omgomg. I luv how the Telus people are always so desperate to throw rocks at Shaw because Telus speeds suck so badly. Everything is throttled on Telus! |

And I get 500kbps download and 90kbps upload, no caps. No need to leave now, I guess. |

| reply to Derfel The Telus B$ spreaders have absolutely NOTHING to argue about anymore except caps which is pointless given the speed difference. Telus effectively throttles everything up and down without any extra equipment. DSL is a very effective non-discriminant throttler of clueless subscriber.
So basically the B$ spreaders have NO argument except...."oh ya....well just you wait till 2009 when Telus upgrades their network.....then it's gonna be a halfway close horse race..."
But hey, you got a free Ipod or monkey or LCD or whatever bribe Telus is offering this month.
LOL! |

Maybe you misunderstood... my speed tests come in at around 4500/650. I only pay $25.99 a month for that speed. It's that fast anytime I want. I can download 500GB a month and hear nothing from my ISP. That's why I'm not switching. |

Can you take a screenshot of your speed test results at »www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ ? Pls post a link to your ISPs site with info on your $25.99 per month plan thanks. I could find no advertised speeds at MTSs site. Probably for a good reason:)

2 edits | reply to Derfel I was just about to do that same thing:

$40.95 plan usually, $24.95 for the first year. With TV, phone and internet, I get $15 of the entire bill. Your 9300 speeds are impressive, but I'll save my $10/mth and also save myself the bandwidth cap. I'm usually averaging 100GB down, 70GB up a month, if not more.
What are you getting for upload? |
