totally new to gentoo but have been using ubuntu for some time. normally how long does it take install using the gtk+ installer? i seem to be stuck at the 'installing additional packages' stage. it shows that there are 485 packages to install and everything is going very slowly. after 3 hours i am only at package 121. is this normal? i cancel the whole process and went to bed instead. mind you i need not select any extra packages. i just went with those ticked by default. |

| reply to hellfried Good luck with the gtk installer. Last time I tried it (about 6 months ago). It was terribly broken. Instead use your livecd and the Gentoo handbook and install gentoo the proper way. You will learn a lot more that way. -- Ubuntu User 6620 |

| reply to hellfried Yea, that installer was a good idea, but turned out to be a train wreck. The 2006.1 min install version is out. You shouldn't have much to update if you use it - even if you choose to run the "~" tree. As raw was saying, kde takes a while, but if you need open office, use openoffice-bin. I really see no need to compile it - unless you want the pretty Gentoo splash screen |

| reply to hellfried Compiling takes forever on big X stuff. That sounds about right for a modern system. It took, I think an hour or two just to compile X and its dependencies with no window manager on a 1.8 GHz amd64 for me. I can imagine how much time a window manager, especially KDE, would take to compile. -- The Problem With Music. Our Rationale Time to rewrite the DMCA. |
