| i have verizon dsl for over 5 years. my speed is 134kbps down, and 575kbps up right now. it changes every day. some days it's down like this.. some days it goes back close to the 3.0/768. there's no logic to when it works right. i've read lots of posts on this forum about how to fix it the speed problem. i came to the conclusion that it's all verizon's fault.
now i'm about to order a second dsl line for my neighbor in the other apartment in my house. i want dry loop dsl. but i'm worried that they might get the same speeds, and i wouldnt wanna pay like 40 bucks/month for that.
what should I do? do any other companies have dry loop dsl? |

| reply to n604 The competitors who offer dry loop are (as far as I can tell) are geared to business customers, and are more expensive. Between this and your other post in this forum, it seems that you may be keeping your dial tone and are just unhappy with your current DSL. So why not try to troubleshoot that problem. Are you using the NY server at »www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ ? Have you gone in to your modem to check the stats at »192.168.1.1/transtat.htm ? Also, any info, like do you have a NID, alarm system, satellite will also be helpful. Any static or noise issues on your voice line? Do you loose sync? What leads you to the conclusion that it's all that it's all Verizon's fault |

1 edit | thanks a lot for the reply.
Between this and your other post in this forum, it seems that you may be keeping your dial tone and are just unhappy with your current DSL.
I have 2 seperate issues going on: 1. In my apartment my dsl is unpredictable. some days its very slow, some days it works at the correct speed. I'm using this on a line that has a dial tone, and I don't wanna get rid of this dial tone. 2. In the other apartment they had not internet, and they just cancelled the phoneline too. They wanna order DSL and get a voip phone for it. but if they get slow speeds like this, it makes the voip phone unusable when browsing websites at the same time...
So why not try to troubleshoot that problem.
i've tried. i followed the instructions in the other posts. nothing changed. then a few days later the speed was working fast again. then a few days later it was slow again.
Are you using the NY server at www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ ?
yes, I often check the speeds.
Have you gone in to your modem to check the stats at 192.168.1.1/transtat.htm ?
that link doesn't work for me. i have a linksys befsr41 router. the 192.168.1.1 works to access it, but the transtat.htm doesn't.
Also, any info, like do you have a NID, alarm system, satellite will also be helpful.
i have a NID (if that's the box on the side of the house), no alarm, no satellite
Any static or noise issues on your voice line?
sometimes i hear "sssshhhh" in the background on the phone.
Do you loose sync?
i don't know. what is it like when someone looses sync?
What leads you to the conclusion that it's all that it's all Verizon's fault
my friend has the exact same problem, and he lives 50 miles from here. one day it works fine, then it slows again. then it works fine again for him too. he did everything with customer support. so at this point we just accept the fact that its verizon's fault, and there's nothing we can do about it.
thanks again for the help. |

| Besides your router you should have a Westell modem that has a DSL or ready light that has to be solid for you to stay connected. In order to retrieve the stats you would have to be connected directly to that modem. When trouble occurs try to eliminate as many variables as possible: like disconnecting all telephone devices and then re-powering modem and router. Do you have multiple computers, and are you wireless? There are many factors that could be causing your trouble. Going to »www.acedsl.com/ and inputting your # should give you your loop length. This could also be helpful in determining whether Voip will work good for your neighbor. When we talk about a NID, we are usually interested in the type that you can open with a screw driver and has a modular test plug to isolate the line. |

| reply to n604 I just remembered seeing numerous threads about slowdowns at night in Brooklyn. These were a few months back, but are still obtainable. Just enter Brooklyn in to search at the top of the DSL forum and you can see what I mean. If these situations seem similar to your problem, you might want to post next time it happens to see if others are still having issues. |

1 edit | reply to n604 that was a good tip about brooklyn. thanks. i checked out several threads about problems in brooklyn. in one of them a guy said he accidentally used 2 phone filters on the line, and when he removed it the problem was gone... so what i did was i changed my Y-adapter for the phone cable that divides the line to the modem and to my phone... and i changed the phone filter also. the speed was miraculously back to normal. I thought that was it.. a bad Y adapter!
it was good for 4-5 days and i was happy. now all of a sudden it went down to the 200 download speed again for no reason... so what i did was: just unplug the phone cable from the wall, and plug it back in after 5 seconds. the speed was back to normal again.
so this solves it.. i don't know what's causing the slowdown, but this fixes it.
let me know if it works for anyone else. |
