One of our crew guys at my power company found a guy dead at one of our substations. He'd been trying to steal copper ground cabling from some of the equipment in the substation.
Based on the amount he'd already cut out of the equipment before he got smoked, they estimated he forfeited his life for roughly $250 worth of copper cable.
We've had roughly 10 substations vandalized in a similar fashion this year alone all because of copper. -- I'd kill for a Nobel peace prize! |

2 edits | reply to ke4pym In the province of Quebec (Canada), old churches with old copper roofs are very common. In the last year or two there have been multiple reports of copper roofs being vandalised during the night for the sole purpose to steel the copper. Sad!
Copper is now a valuable commodity. I know someone who was able to get about 1000$ Canadian for 4" copper water pipes. He only had about 100 feet of it! |

The latest trend is to steal catalytic converters from cars. |
