voip is cheaper.. most cable co's let you choose to not have cable tv with broadband.. so why go with a phone company thats going to force you to have phone through them when u can get cable and voip??
Many telco's are offering DSL without phone these days, it's called "Dry DSL" or "Naked DSL". Bell Canada started offering this sometime ago. There are many users who have DSL only plus VoIP.

Define many because I personally can't name one off the top of my head. Then show me where it is that they offer this, as I doubt they do it in all their markets as well.

Bellsouth does not offer such a service, and they have coverage in 20% of the states...

Verizon for one. Check out their website.

And even if it's not widespread, this is the way the market is going, so while you are not entirely incorrect, you're not exactly up to speed either.

Qwest has been doing Standalone dsl for quite awhile also. One of the first major telco's that actually offered it

Qwest does - cheapest route was with Qwest, net ISP and naked dsl line(no MSN) - and I hope they are in my neighborhood soon. I am stuck with cable right now, but would prefer DSL. Viva Upload

Yeah, but they charge almost as much for just DSL as they would for DSL _and_ a basic phone line. Not really naked.

Verizon's dryline is only around $5 more a month for HSI. Much less than a basic phone line.

Yup. Just like cable charges almost as much for 'naked' cable modem service as they do for cable modem service 'clothed' in basic cable.

Where is your point?
