Re: Monowall Captive Portal only work when I'm set to DHCP ?

I should have asked about this sooner. I see that there is a lot of room for refinement of my network design for these environments. Another snag I have is that my networks are still bridged, which allows client to client connectivity. I just finished a 3rd property, so I'll need to start working on these things. I appreciate the pointers.

Edit - Airplane, thanks for letting me tap your thread. I'll start a new one in a few days as I get started on some of these problems.

info box will pop-up in windows informing each user of a duplicate IP on the system, and the tech support phone will ring, twice .
That happens only on a LAN or bridged network with duplicate IP.

"Universal Client" hotspots rely on modified Linux NAT code and some crash when second duplicate IP tries to connect. Others accept the second client but start sending wrong packets to both clients.

Hello all:

The Dlink DSA 3100 also has the universal client you are talking about. Whereby if they are set up for a static IP, they will still be able to get on the Hot Spot.

I haven't worked with it for a while, but it seemed to work pretty well.

I can only guess what could happen if two customer has same static IP.

The hotels run into this problem a few times a month. Usually somebody's corporate network with some off the wall IP scheme, so dups would almost never occur. I really need to get this technology figured out. Thanks again.

Nomadix "universal client" feature is not present in current version of m0n0wall.

It is useful when customers have manually set static IP on their laptops (usually 192.168.1.x) but do not know how to set DHCP.

I can only guess what could happen if two customer has same static IP.

There is a feature in Mikrotik called Universal Client (although I think it's called something else now) that allows a client to have their IP address and DNS set to anything - it will 1:1 NAT it and allow them to use the network without having to reconfigure their adapter. Not sure if Monowall has this feature, but you might want to dig through the docs for something like this.
Now that iz something that I need, and have been looking for. If Mikrotic has this ability, I'm fixing to get all over Mikrotic. IF m0n0 can be made to do this, I would be EKXTATIC, but have yet to hear that it is possible or not. Thanks for dropping the tip !

What I mean about taking the browser to the auth page manually is to book-mark it as a favorite in your browser next time you see it. Then when it does not automatically come up when you need it to, use the book-mark in the browser's "favorites" to get to the correct address. It works for me !

If you take the browser manually to the auth page, it will allow you to sign in and will give you access.
Hi SipSizurp:

Thanks for the reply.

I'll keep that in mind about the MAC on the portal exection list.

I'm not sure what you mean to "take the browser manually to the auth page".

Add your laptop MAC to the portal exception list which will permit permanent access with no authentication required. Be sure the static you use is outside the DHCP range of the portal.

Edit - I have had some instances in funny circumstances when the auth page would not come up, and I could get no access. If you take the browser manually to the auth page, it will allow you to sign in and will give you access.

Hi Lutful:

I sometimes have my laptop IP address set to
198.168.3.2.
Mask - 255.255.255.0.
Gateway - 192.168.3.1
DNS - 64.65.196.6

for this particular wireless installation at my home.

I never noticed before, that I can only get the captive portal page to come up if my laptop is set to obtain an IP address automatically. Maybe thats not a bug at all. I just never noticed that before.

To address your question: You are right...when I go to hotspots, like at hotels, I only use obtain an IP address automatically.

I just didn't realize that the captive portal wouldn't come up, if I had my laptop set to a static IP address. I thought something was wrong this morning, when the CP page wouldn't come up...lol.

What static IP, gateway and DNS address do you enter in your laptop to access other captive portals and hotspots ?

I think I have discovered that the Monowall Captive Portal only works when my laptop is set up to obtain an IP address automatically.

If I set my laptop to static IP address, then Captive Portal won't even let me get to the Captive Portal page. I can't even ping my WISP interface on Monowall.

Have any of you also run into that situation? I don't know that it is a problem. Maybe Monowall was set up purposely to only let people on the Captive Portal page, if they are set up to obtain an IP address automatically.

Thanks
