FIOS ActionTec router is prone to freezing

The ActionTec MI-424-WR router can't handle a large volume of simultaneous server updates. For example: DHT in bittorrent programs. Or updating a multiplayer server list in a game.

Notes:
-Started from a fresh router reset.
-Opening 192.168.1.1 in browser to access the router works.
-Refresh server list in Steam(approx 1300 servers)
-Opening 192.168.1.1 stops working. Router is unresponsive and no websites can be accessed, though currently existing internet connections will remain intact. Other computers on the network experience the same inability to access websites and the router itself.

Router reset restores internet access afterwards.

The router checked their update server and reported that the firmware is up to date.

-Did the same tests on DHT and had the same result. Enabling DHT in bittorrent programs will freeze the router.

The firmware update feature built into the Actiontec MI-424 does not work. You must download the firmware to your hard drive and update that way.

Go to one of the following sites and download the latest v45.120 firmware:

Updated the firmware, thanks!

Unfortunately, the problem persists, no change in behavior.

Have you tried assigning a dedicated port for these applications by creating a new service with port forwarding, in the format all->port?

Once you create the service, add it for the computer IP address of your choice.

I think the router is just cheap and worthless, verizon got a deal with a cheap no-name brand and they went for it. Instead, they should have gone with a brand that actually works. Think verizon, cheap is never good. Verizon invests billions into their new fios service and then hooks it up with a cardboard box.. not smart. I mean think of it this way, a hyundai is a car just like a mercedes is, but you don't put mercedes parts into a hyundai. Same here, don't mix an awesome and fast service with a crappy router that will just make people mad.

More opinions without substance from 'anon'

If you can't figure out how to configure a feature-rich router for your game server, don't whine about it.

Heck, its based on same Linux technology (»www.jungo.com/) as Linksys.

My Actiontec router had the same freezing problem when running Bitcomet. I was running firmware 4.0.16.1.45.80.2

I have since moved back to WRT54G with third party firmware and never experience any freezing problem.

I've been fighting this problem for weeks with CS:source on STEAM. What 3rd party firmware are you running? I've had similar problems with a Netgear WGR614v6 and Linksys BEFSR41 v4. The lockup is only 30 seconds or so, rather that the actiontec's 3 minute lockups, but I'd love to get this working.

I'm having the same problem. I just updated the firmware. I'll report back if I still have issues.

I use dd-wrt. you need a router that supports linux firmware. Set maximum ports to 4096 and it just runs forever.

the cheapest linux base router you can buy is the buffalo WHR-G54S, usually go on sale for about US$40.00 the Linksys WRT54GL is about US$60.00 available from online stores only.

Your right on it is a feature rich router that is very easy to create rules that step on each other, causing what appears to be freezing and terrible delays bringing sites up. Fix your port forwarding up and or change the last rules you added that are causing it to malfunction.

The lockup problems appear to be an 'overflow' problem that's been causing some real headaches for some of the more popular online games, more and more posts are showing up concerning the actiontec router. When a server list is refreshed there is something on the order of 12000 CS:source servers running at any given time worldwide. The latest .120 version of the firmware seems a bit more resistant to the lockups, I can now view server info after refreshing the list without a lockup. If I let the server refresh go for more than 500 or 600 servers without stopping it I have to wait about 3 minutes for the router to reboot though.
I've tried running without opening ports, opening the ports listed on the STEAM help pages, and running a DMZ - all with identical results.
Only 5 weeks until the FIOS TV is turned on here, so I'm hoping to get all of this working correctly before then. I'm still switching between the Actiontec, an old netgear RP614v1, and a direct connection right now.

Is there a "clearly" defined channel to Actiontec for reporting these type of issues?

I have seen several posts here where contact is mentioned but it remains unclear what the process is for reporting Actiontec issues.

I downloaded the firmware and successfully upgraded the router. However, the username and password no longer work. I tried the default (admin, password) and that does not work. The original setup had the 'no password' option set with the default username of 'admin'.

Can someone help?

Thanks,

Reset the router through its tiny reset button. This will reset all your 'settings' with factory defaults, including the username/password. The user manual talks about this.
