| [RI] Bittorrent just stopped uploading....
I don't know what happened but, as of Sep 18th, all my bittorrent uploading abilities ceased....I am not pleased.....
I have no issues with the router and have Azureus set to proper port forwarding.
As I said everything was working just fine....
Now, I start up a torrent and it starts downloading at about 200k....I have peer connections but not a single upload connection....
Then after about 5 mins of downloading the download speed slowly goes to zero.
Azureus shows all NAT connections are fine and all status markers are green.
There should be no problems.
It worked before....What is going on?
I think Cox is blocking out communications....I see so many posters with the same issues....It can't be coincidence..... |

So I just have to switch to a different service then?
Oh, well...Cox had awesome speeds...too bad... |

| GregDB, First let me say I am sorry you are experiencing any issues while using the Cox network. Next, please keep in mind that this is not an Official Cox support site. So if you are expecting an official answer it does not always happen here. The Cox representatives that frequent this site are here to help where we can, however we do so on a volunteer basis as time permits.
While Bit-Torrent does have legitimate uses, Cox does not support this service and therefore can only offer minor troubleshooting resources, and then they are limited to your connectivity to the Internet and Cox provided services.
Obviously my response does not help you with your situation, I provide the details for your information. I would suggest you run the normal checks: Any router changes? Anti-Virus and Firewall up-to-date? Current Bit Torrent software version? Has the Bit Torrent service been taken down or are their servers experiencing issues? -- Thanks, Charles, Cox New Orleans Engineering. |

| Thank you for the response.
All my software is up to date and all router settings are exactly the same.
I am on a MacBook Pro and have no problems connecting the hardware to a different network (not Cox) and using bittorrent.
I think I'm just gonna have to change services.
I don't like having to deal with connection issues that shouldn't exist...or can't be fixed.... |

| Oh well SBC will be letting me live on for awhile....
I'm using there service right now and uploading quite well.
Ahem....
HA HA HA...
Ahem....
Not everyone uses bittorrent software for illegal purposes.
Also I couldn't even update World of Warcraft cause it uses a similar interface for downloads....
Now with SBC I have fully functional internet....and I will be letting everyone in my area know about these issues and post in all forums I am a member of, that Cox internet is not a very good service for peer to peer transport. |

| Nah....I tried a bunch of different ports....It was a no go.
I changed to SBC and all is working properly.
Same hardware, same configuration....just a different provider!
Now it all works!
If your in the Rhode Island area and have problems I recommend this solution.
Switch providers! It's fast, easy and worked perfectly!
Cox was great at canceling service and gave me no problems. |

| Well I live in an area where I would only get minimal dsl speeds as I am out to far from the switching station. And I would rather keep my speeds cause I use a premium usenet provider and I can download an entire dvd5 movie in just a little over 40 minutes. I am able to find everything I am looking for on usenet and I don't have to worry bout the riaa and those other loosers from tracking what I download as while I am downloading I am not sharing the same file and therefore can't be tracked.

| reply to GregDB You're not alone on this issue. I have SBC/AT&T DSL and Cox HSI. I now use Limewire with my AT&T connection and always get a crapload of uploads (people really go for the desktop wallpaper). It doesn't work with Cox, the uploads that is. 100% failure there on uploads. See my older thread at the link about this.
»Cox vs. SBC
When hard evidence of ISP interference of P2P is presented such as this, the defenders of that ISP are pretty quiet. Normally they try to blame your system or blame other factors of the network. |

| Yeah, Cox didn't blame my system or settings.
They just explained that they couldn't help me with my issue and didn't support bittorrent use.
So I said "Cancel me then.." They said "OK" Easy as cake!
Hey now I'm happy.
And I'm sure Cox will just continue to loose customers based on this issue.
I could care less at this point.
So if you want P2P connections don't use Cox....it's as simple as that. |

| reply to GregDB When I was "targeted" by Cox, I used WinMx and would leave it running all night and into the day while I was at work and would always get a good number of uploads. They didn't like this since they don't allow servers on residential accounts.
Those who upload sparingly with P2P seem to get left alone by Cox. This works in Cox's favor because someone always comes along and says "I'm uploading fine over here", making it appear that Cox is less likely the culprit. I know better.
SBC/AT&T doesn't mind servers and/or someone actually using their upload bandwidth. What a concept! |

| reply to GregDB Is it not regional ?
I know LOTS of people that upload/download more than 250-300GB per month of data here in Oklahoma that have not even had the warning letter for exceeding bandwidth - let alone had uploads throttled.
I know of nobody in my area that has trouble uploading to any torrent site .. so i can only assume is is a regional restriction ... ? |

join:2003-03-19 Chula Vista, CA | reply to GregDB It could be regional, but I think they (Cox) have the hardware/software ability to target individual users. |

| I think it's regional/user specific...It probably cost them a bit of money/bandwith to monitor connections so they just target specific areas or users.
Like I said SBC works, so if you go that route you don't have to worry about loosing your connection. |

| reply to louhsieng Did anyone else notice that the Cox rep (engineer?) that responded was reduced to Level 1 tech support language? Cox's handling of P2P traffic is obviously "hush hush."
said by louhsieng :While Bit-Torrent does have legitimate uses, Cox does not support this service and therefor.... "....and therefor actively hinders the service's useability to encourage the user to either stop using the service altogether and just do email and web browsing, or just switch providers. If you insist on using the P2P service, we actually prefer you switch providers so we can cram more casual web surfers onto our network to maximize profit. A third alternative is to shell out the big bucks for a business account in order to make P2P useable again. We like the third option a lot. It's beyond us why some DSL providers don't engage in our "hush hush" P2P crippling practices."
Doesn't that feel good to get that off your chest? |
