That's what they did with the official PS2 Hard Drive. Basically, it used a very specific firmware which would allow it to be able to show up in the ps2's file browser and let you save data to/from it.

HDLoader didn't really care what hard drive you had, so long as there was one there.

Can't you replace it with a WD 200GB drive? or no? Are they the standard IDE drives I'm a noob to this....
