[POLL] Encryption/Password Software - 2006 Members Choice

Wikipedia describes encryption as "the process of obscuring information to make it unreadable without special knowledge. While encryption has been used to protect communications for centuries, only organizations and individuals with an extraordinary need for secrecy had made use of it. In the mid-1970s, strong encryption emerged from the sole preserve of secretive government agencies into the public domain, and is now employed in protecting widely-used systems, such as Internet e-commerce, mobile telephone networks and bank automatic teller machines."

Editing now wouldn't keep it looking so purty

So: If you use "Other" just state See Profile so (he'll have to count the replies)

I use my password manager - RememberMe.
It's free and has gotten some good reviews.

Well, it really depends on what one is encrypting doesn't it? I use KeepPass as a simple and portable method for storing passwords, I use GPG and PGP for encrypting website form submissions and other such email related stuff. And a PGP disk for encrypting my financial and other critical data. I use Winzip when I need an encrypted, compressed file. So, depending on the task, there are a variety of encryption methods one would use.

CompuSec here..

It works great to keep others off the computer w/o setting up a BIOS password.
[It can make it so you have to enter a password before the operating system loads.]

Great poll state See Profile!

another vote for the unlisted freeware dscrypt »members.ozemail.com.au/~nulifetv···reeware/
which is a very tiny and portable standalone 25k app for simple drag'n'drop file encrypt/decrypting.

and KeePass
and WinRar (had a free promo day earlier this year) which is currently replacing other fine freeware zip utilities that offer password protection
and the proprietary one on my Acer notebook computer

Still hoping for a sweet little portable FOLDER encrypting freeware.

I also use Roboform to manage passwords. For actual encryption I use BestCrypt mostly, DriveCrypt sometimes and WinRAR occasionally.

state See Profile, thank you for the poll.

I voted Paper notebook or cocktail napkin.

I have 5-10 passwords/passphrases that I alternate on various sites. I created an Excel spreadsheet to list what sites are using what passwords and the dates I changed them last. The spreadsheet is printed to paper and then burned to a RW CD and the spreadsheet on my hard drive is deleted and reloaded as needed for editing. Both the printed list and the CD are then stored in the P (for password) volume of my encyclopedias.

Passwords to sensitive information (ie, retirement & bank accounts) are NEVER written down; they are committed to memory.

I use -
Axcrypt, PGP/GPG, Password Safe and TrueCrypt

Axcrypt for quick jobs, single/small numbers of files, TC for larger jobs, more files.

Password Safe for storage of my passwords, though I think I'll phase that out as I gradually replace my passwords with ones created using the Simple Formula for Strong Passwords.

And as for PGP/GPG, I have the keys, I just rarely bother to use them. For someone who collects email addresses like some collect stamps, I rarely actually *use* email and rarer still do I find someone who would even know what PGP is.
