Please help with old photo

I know this photo is in bad condition,it was just recently found.I thought it was lost for good.It is the only picture of the dog,his name was Rex and he died about 2 or 3 days after this picture was taken in 1972.

Pic 1 is original.
Pic 2 is the best i could do with Paint Shop Pro.

I am sure this is a big reach,but anything better then what i have would be a big improvement!
