Social-networking Web site Facebook.com is in serious talks to sell itself to Internet media company Yahoo Inc. for an amount that could approach $1 billion, The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday.

In March, BusinessWeek reported that the company had turned down a $750 million offer and hoped to fetch as much as $2 billion in a sale. It has been separately reported that Viacom held talks to buy Facebook.

Media companies looking to acquire Internet sensations YouTube and Facebook would need to take a "big leap of faith" to pay current valuations on the takeover targets, Time Warner Inc's boss was quoted as saying in an interview.

Dick Parsons told the Financial Times media companies wanted to increase traffic to their Web sites to compete with Google but valuations of $1 billion on YouTube and Facebook were too high.
Will Yahoo pay $1 billion for a site to sell more of its ads?

He's probably right in the sense that the dot.com bubble burst is still fresh in peoples' minds. But I think it's a hoot that the guy coming with the "leap of faith" comment is some cat who works for a company that bought AOL for how many billion?

Perhaps he's trying to talk down the deal because there's something to it? The question is, is myspace et al. built to last or is it a flash-in-the-pan teeny bopper pop-group-type phenomenon?
