[ViaTalk] How can i unlock my vonage adapter

Ive been with viatalk long enough to finally cancel Vonage.
When i called to cancel the account th lady told me to just keep the linksys router. I called Viatalk and the guy there said that he couldnt help me because it was locked by vonage.
Ive seen posts in here earlier about unlocking vonage does anyone have a link.
I goofed when i signed up for viatalk and instead of getting a router like i should have i received a phone adapter.
thanks

First of all, you didn't good. Having a standalone adapter is usually a better option. It allows you to use a real router. Just buy a decent router such as a linksys. Personally, if you can wait for shipping, I would go for a Zyxel X-550 or it's clone the Trendnet TEW-611BRP. I'm a believer that combined routers/adapters are convenient, and have their place, but a separate adapter and router is better.

Now, if you still want to unlock your vonage adapter/router, then there are two things you are going to need to do. 1st; know what type adapter/router it is, and 2nd; search on this forum for that router/adapter and the word unlock. Sorry, but there are litterally THOUSANDS of posts about unlocking vonage adapters. There are 3 specific for unlocking 3 different models. I'm not going to reinvent the wheel when all the information is right here at this site.

It isn't as simple as "Monkey Maintenance". You can't just follow 10 easy steps and you have an unlockeded adapter. It's a matter of learning. You'll read the posts and it will say to do certain things. But, it might not say how to do a certain thing. You will then have to search the forums some more on how to do that particular step. You must understand, that unlocking adapters, modems, firmware, etc... is usually a collaboration among MANY people. Some people post suggestions and experiments, and other experiment, make changes, and add more suggestions. A lot of work, and yes fun, went into these projects. You wanting the 10 easy steps isn't going to cut it. Especially if you ask those that put MONTHS into the project.

I could tell you generically that you need to get your XML file from vonage. You need to downgrade the existing firmware. You need to spoof the xml file with a provided flat file. Then you can get into it and turn provisioning off. Reupgrade the firmware, and use it. Saying HOW to do those steps, us what takes searching this forum. Plus, that is only the basic concept. There are so many specifics depending on what adapter/router you are talking about.

So, if you are really into technology, and want to play, then procede with your unlocking crusade. If you aren't, then go out and buy a router that you can connect your adapter and the rest of your computer network to. Buy ones I suggested, or if you are impatient and want it now, buy a linksys locally. Personally, the only real advice I can suggest, is to stay away from Dlink and Netgear. Good luck. Later... Mike....

I was under the impression that once the adapter has been connected to the internet, that it cannot be unlocked.
Maybe someone has found away around this since I last unlocked one, but when I unlocked mine, they had never been connected to the internet.

It depends on a lot of factors. But, fwiw, the RT31P2, which has recently been successfully unlocked, requires you to connect it to the internet to have it provisioned the first time by Vonage. (Yes, there is a way around this if you don't want it on the internet). The one you are probably referring to, is a PAP2 with a firmware version higher than I believe 3.1.6 . Higher than that, and it's a much harder experience. Keeping it off the internet, can keep it from upgrading to a higher firmware.

There's a lot of variables on whether or not an old vonage adapter can be unlocked and used with a different provider. 1st, and most importantly, what adapter is it. Later... mike...

the only think locked about the Vonage-provided Linksys router are the analog phone jacks. It should work fine as is simply as a router. plug your VT adaptor into that router and you should be fine. did you try that?

I have vt1000 which i got from vonage long time back, currently i am with viatalk. I want to unlock it and wana use it with other providers as it has 2 fxs ports, i tried a lot and unable to find any lead on how to unlock vt1000...

I dont know why companies just to have land fills, why not change the customer some $$s and have it unlock that customer/xcustomer dont just through it away. I dont see any use for this.

Please let me know if someone has any idea..

Thanks

There is no way to unlock the Motorola VT1000/1005. This unit does not have any local configuration interface for configuring SIP. It gets all its information from a server at Vonage.

No one has found a way to hack this device yet.
