 | A new 'logo' image for "All things UNIX"? I've decided to make a new image for the main header of this forum because the incongruity of Java mascot in the current one has been bugging me a while.
Well, this what I have so far; it may be too wide to integrate aethestically, though. |

I like yours much, much better and the java mascot's name is duke (I think) and what the hell is it anyway? -- "Why doesn't Lynx display TrueType fonts?" |

 | reply to Triskelios Yeah I'm all for a change. Maybe some subtle animation as well? Subtle being the key word. -- Windows XP screenshots |

 | reply to Triskelios Yup, the Java mascot is called Duke; it was apparently designed as the character for a desktop help "agent" (reminiscent of a particular paperclip that postdates it?) in 1991 for Sun's Green UI, which Java arose from. No idea what it is... |

Well, Mac OS X is mainly a combination of the NeXTStep libs and FreeBSD, but it certainly has enough modifications to count as a new a OS, so OK, here goes (the 'X' is kinda thin, though)...
Does this look better, or worse? Update: I made the X slightly larger; hard change it much while keeping the original look.
I'll add the animation later (maybe have the glow behind the pic of the box change intensity or rotate).
Zuhaib, I am not exactly meaning to be in competition with your images...

I thought the previous one looked good already, but yeah. All logos and ideas welcome. -- "If there's something I don't know, give me time and I will try my best to learn it." |

The real question is why add geeko, the SuSE mascot? You shouldn't open up the can of worms by adding spesific distro's mascots the next thing you know, someone will ask for him to put a crimson hat on Our Lord Penguin and that's just blasphemy. -- "Why doesn't Lynx display TrueType fonts?" |

*Catchy title* Here goes the "subtle" animation (just rotation of the flare effect behind the image of the box (actually an SGI 750)). I dropped the Mac OS X logo since it just doesn't look right when added to the left (feel free to add it or anything else yourself and submit the new image; source images available upon request).
Hopefully, this is satisfactory. |

Re: A new 'logo' image for All things UNIX? Not to step on any toes here.. but what is exactly the point of animation in a logo? To bring attention to it? We're here to read the forums, not look at logos, so this attention is definitely unnecessary and in fact may be distracting. Logo for a forum should be subtle and at the same time clearly define the purpose of the forum. Personally, I find the current logo does the job well.. Duke or not. |

Yes you are right. An animation of Bill kissing Tux's @ss is much more appropriate and clearly defines the point of the forum. -- Windows XP screenshots |

 | reply to drjim I like the image.
Since your adding mascots, why not add the HP e3000 Owl? |
|
 | reply to Triskelios The HP e3000 Owl is only representative of that hardware platform, not a *NIX OS. HP-UX does not appear to have a real logo available, either.
I agree that the forum logo certainly should not be be too distracting, and am just requesting feedback on the various versions of this new one. Hopefully, the animation isn't too prominent, or the non-animated one can be used, or one with more "subtle" animation. |

I was under the impression that the Owl was the un-official mascot of MPE/iX, however, one could argue that MPE/iX isn't truly a *NIX OS anyway
