Can't read DVD+R 16X

I have a laptop running a 24X CD-RW & DVD Combo but it doesn't recognise DVD+Rs. I was wondering if I'll have the same issue with DVD+RWs (2X and/or 4X) as I need this format to back up all my data.

Could anyone shed some light in here, please?

Thx.

Are you sure the drive is DVD writable? Many drives can write and re-write CDs but are only DVD-ROM.

Check the specs of your laptop. Older drives weren't always dual format. They either worked with -R or +R. If -R doesn't work, -RW most likely won't work either. If it's suppose to work with -R's, then see if there is a firmware update. Drives may need an update to read newer disks.

I agree... If it's called a "combo" 24X CD-RW/DVD drive, then it can write CD's but only read DVD's. Do you have the model number?

Not sure about that as I brought my laptop in Taiwan and the manual is in Chinese.

ASUS A6Q00VC.

I just found out my machine doesn't have a DVD+-RW dual layer drive, hence can only read DVDs. Well, time to upgrade my drive.

Thx Howie.

Thanks Howie?? Well, that's good of you, gesc, but can't javaMan See Profile get a little love around here?

BTW, I buy all my stuff here in the good 'ol USA, but those manuals are usually in Chinese too, if you know what I mean.
