 802.11b Question

Hey Folks, I'm sliding over from the Unix section to ask a quick question.

I have (and use) a Netgear MR314 ethernet and wireless router with a MA401 wireless card. I am looking to purchase an X-series IBM laptop with the integrated wireless 802.11b and I don't want to fork out a lot of money without knowing if I can connect the two (IBM and Netgear).

Is the 802.11b wireless hardware from (in this example) Netgear and IBM compatible? More broadly, can I connect different wireless cards with the Netgear MR314, or is there some type of proprietary issue between vendors?

I have no idea how this works and didn't see any quick answers at the shortcuts above.

Thanks for any answers...

clangeddin,

Seeing as it is all 802.11b, it should work like a champ. Mixing 802.11b with purely proprietary gear won't fly, but as long as it is all 802.11b, then you should be fine.

Just bought a Linksys WAP and a Belkin USB receiver, will see soon if they play well together. Silly silly CompUSA couldn't seem to "find" their 13 Linksys receivers they supposedly had it stock, so had to go with the only other USB they had there. Argh. At least the girl helping me was sorta cute I am soooooooooo bored right now. Sorry for the rant

So essentially, I should be able to input the same encryption password through whatever interface I get with the IBm 802.11b (integrated into the X-series laptop) and it will work on the Netgear MR314 wireless router?

In a nutshell yes it should work.
