| 50ft phone cord to modem
i am using a 50ft phone cord to connect my modem to the wall jack because i have no jack in the room my pc is located. And i live in an apartment so installing one is not going to happen. If i place modem in the room with the wall jack and run a ethernet cable to the computer would that be better? |

[snip] If i place modem in the room with the wall jack and run a ethernet cable to the computer would that be better? Yes, it would be the best solution. The main problem is the majority of extension and patch cords are not UTP data cables/cords but flat 4 wire with the conductors running parallel to each other. The longer cords are usually the same flat 4 parallel conductors and with no twisting of the pairs it just makes them longer antennas for picking up all kinds of interference.

Belkin 7 foot Flat End - no molded end
Belkin 7 foot Flat End - no twisted pairs
If you have the ability to make your own cables you can cut an Ethernet cable ends off (RJ45) and put telephone ends on instead (RJ11) and make a long UTP cable yourself. You could double the conductors when crimping so that each line has 2 wires each which can make the cables balanced for longer distances. You can also just leave unused conductors and crimp single wires into the new RJ11 ends when you have the proper crimping tool and use the preferred booted/molded type ends for strain relief.
It would be nice to be able to just use premade RJ45 Ethernet cables as they are cheaper than premade modem/high speed data cables for RJ11/12 Telephone jacks but the 2 images below show why that does not work. You will have to change the Ethernet ends to RJ11 or RJ12.

 Comparing RJ11 to RJ12 to RJ45
Using the 3 images below for reference it will show you how the ends should look if you decide to make you own UTP Telephone Data cables from existing Ethernet cables using new RJ11 ends to replace the RJ45 ends that you will remove. When you do make you own RJ45 Ethernet cables into RJ11 High Speed Data/Modem Cables use these images below so that you can keep the color codes matched as close as possible. This helps if you ever need to troubleshoot your cables.

He's not joking there. Not to thread-jack or anything but I recently found out by accident that my phone lines are picking up what appears to be a HAM radio broadcast from Maine - And I'm in MD! I have a NID splitter/Home-run which isolates the modem from this noise, but this morning the Radio interference was almost as clear as my FM radio. Sound bytes availible to anyone interested. There in sony's proprietary format so you'd need a WMP plugin. -- "My weakness is that I care too much" |

| reply to most_known Here's a link to 25' twisted pair + shielded cables with rj11 phone ends for $5, perhaps you could link 2 together to get the 50' if the DIY CAT5 method won't work for you. »www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00004···?ie=UTF8 |

| this site seems to offer 50ft, 75ft and 100ft shielded twisted pair phone cables: »www.worldofcables.com/store/view···uct=3864
big caveats: 1.I've never seen them before until this thread prompted my curiousity/googling -- and they don't seem to be on resellerratings. 2.You're paying a _lot_ for not DIY'g it...
Would it be safe to assume that if you do have twisted pair/shielded RJ-11 cords, you'd be OK w/a fairly long phone cord, even if you have hi-end DSL (6, 7.1, or 8 mbps)? |
