TV makes intermittent 'rattling' noise

Hi all,

A friend of mine got a TV from a guy who said he was getting rid of it because it makes a 'humming' noise. My friend never got around to using it, and his wife finally decided she wanted it out of the house. So they asked me if I wanted it and I said sure.

The TV is a 27" Phillips Magnavox model number 25TS56 C221.

So now I have it, and I found that an hour or so after it is turned on (sometimes less) it begins to make a rattling sound. The sound is not coming from the speakers, but from the back. The sound continues no matter what volume (or mute) I set the TV at, and no matter what channel I am on.

I noticed tonight that before it started making the sound, if I was using the remote to adjust the volume or change the channel, it would make the sound for a split second as I hit the button on the remote. But after a short while, it was making it non-stop on its own.

I look down into the venting on the back of the case and do not see anything sparking or anything like that. The TV seems to operate fairly normal other than this sound.

Do any of you have any idea what this could be? Is it something worth taking to a shop?

Thanks,
Jim

Sounds like a component rattling as it heats up. Probably the flyback transformer. Not something to screw around with if you don't know what you're doing, unless you LIKE 35 kilovolt water in your jockeys.

Resistance is NOT futile...It's voltage divided by current.

Oh, I would never try to open it up and work on it myself. I know better than that!

I just wonder if it seems it may be worth taking it to a shop, or if it is one of those 'cheaper to buy a new on' type of things.

Thanks for the reply,
Jim

since i am an authorized PASC FE, i can tell you its the deflection yoke vibrating.
you could try "shimming" it or living with it.
replacing the yoke will yield some major alignments.
i dont recommend any of this unless you are experienced.

Thanks for reply.

So what do you think a pro would charge to fix what you suspect is wrong and would it be worth it?

Thanks,
Jim

well since the philips/magnavox brand is budget, it may not be worth the repair.
