I'm dedicating most code changes/improvements to ..

.. the NON FORUM parts of the site for the next few weeks or months. I think they have languished for too long. The ISP listings, tests and tools, all that good stuff.

So if you post your wish here, or bring up an old one, and it can be done without taking too long, it might get done.

In the last few days I've been tweaking
* speed tests
* line quality test
* member test history
* finding ISPs and lodging ISP reviews
* home page news article layouts
* navigation

as well as rationalizing hardware, ordering more, etc.

and I want to do more of this type of work.

How about adding the forum name to the ticker and maybe implementing the mouse-over preview like the forums have?

Is the tweaking the reason all my saved line quality tests have changed from Fail on East Coast and West Coast to Pass?

If there is a bad router en-route, but no packet loss to your IP, then the test is no longer considered a fail as although the router maybe a bit screwed up in terms of its response to ICMP (which can indicate a loaded router), it may still be passing packets onward ok.

Good. That is what I was thinking you had done but wanted to be sure. It was sort of misleading before (at least for me). Thanks! Nice improvement.

Tools page is neat and nice looking now.

What's with the Port-scan? I haven't used it in awhile so I don't how long it has been offline. Is it coming back?

Can forums have a choice to be alphabetical?

It may just be me, but I have a dickens of a time on occasion with spotting a forum.

Recent example was a firewall question thread that I wanted to move from software to Security.
(Let me explain that I mostly sit back in the chair with a big trackball)
I couldn't spot Security... had to finally grab the keyboard and ctrl-F

And when I go to all forums, trying to remember where dev/null is situated.

They are organized by categories, and I guess we get used to them...but it also seems like I hit two different layouts depending on what I am trying to do.
And look for Security Vendors in a different section than Security.

Just wishing.....

Today I've been hitting up the following urls ..

»/speedtest
now shows your last result right under the server status if there is one to find.
Also, speed results page now includes plea for anonymous users to review their ISP. Maybe it is working, we're getting a lot more ISP reviews today than yesterday.

»/badrouters
fixed the page up, was including too many days and taking too long to construct

»/tools
Fixed up the layout to be more logical, to put the most frequently used tests at the top.

»Tools FAQ
minor format change to make FAQ header look cleaner

Also the link to 'review your ISP' is nicer now, it shows direct links to the most commonly reviewed ISPs instead of asking the user to go off and use site search to find the ISP. I really want to fix up the "unassociated review" system, the current one just isn't working well!

I use the default style and this page looks like crap. Any chance of getting it to look at the desired style sheet (or whatever)?

Why are the caches so slow anyway? I make changes to my posting tag and it takes hours and hours to change, like about 3. I also see compaints about avatar changes, too. Is there something inherently slow in the design that keeps these changes from being made any sooner? Just curious, I know it's not the biggest thing on your plate.

there isn't any cache invalidation done when people change their profile, thats all the issue is. Some of the avatar (gif) caches are beyond our control though.

Probably just me, but I'm always clicking on this thinking it will take me to "all" the forums. Why not change it to FFs since there's already a "Forums" tab above? Damn sad explanation, but it's the best I could do.

Non-forum...why is there an option to delete a members speed test? The reason I ask is, as you can see I've kept my best results from many months back because it shows up on the "Members Tech" map. I'm not getting those speeds now, but it looks good on the map and I've had some fun with it. But are my speed results useful to others if the look at the map, no.

Re: I'm dedicating most code changes/improvements to ..

Some of yours will auto delete next month.

What I'd like to know is why has the site kept a security scan test from 2001, several from 2002 and several from 2003 but won't let me keep speed test results older than 6 months? I know I can delete the security scans but why does the site auto delete speed tests after six months and not security scans for six years?!

I would find it useful to have kept some old speed tests but there is no button to do that. I don't need any of the old security scans...I've just been lazy about deleting them and kept thinking the site would.

I'm not getting you.
You can delete items from your own test history because people don't like clutter. In your case you are choosing to leave them around. If you don't want to mislead people, if those speed results are incorrect, then remove them yourself?

Point missed...the ability to mislead people is there if someone wants to use it. I thought perhaps you would want to take that ability away. If not, that's okay...it was just a suggestion on a way to make the "Member Tech" map more reliable.

I've got one, though it may be kind of specific.

Can things in the endeffect theme be fixed? There is no load bar, no topic points, and no inbound links displayed.

Also, the background of the "news" and "forums" on the ticker doesn't change when I click them, that's no big deal though.

'endeffect' has been renamed to 'shades' and is now published as a global theme so that it appears on the top right menu along with 'default' and 'dark' ('seti' has been removed). You can still pick a theme using 'more..' however.

It would be nice to be able to delete our custom RSS feeds on this page:

»/prefs/boxes

May be there's a way that I haven't figured out yet but currently, once you create a custom RSS feed on that page, it's going to stay there forever even if the link no longer works. You wouldn't be able to edit it either if you typed the link wrong and you could eventually end up with a cluttered and inaccurate list.

Today I fixed up the way comments attached to news articles appear for logged out users. (removed the useless thumbs-up icon, cleaned up the format a bit. Also completely removed a view style that almost nobody used that was nearly broken anyway).

Also added the instant message pages to the navigation bar (Your.. IMs)

Made various changes to improve the experience for anonymous users.

Also changed the default 'i see people' format to be a little more compact, but clearer.

Possibly also added code to invalidate a cache when user profiles are changed, such that the changes will show up immediately.

Using Flat view, I no longer see a blue background and don't seem to be missing posts any longer. However, the second page of posts is all repeat posts from the first page but not all posts are repeated (about the last half are repeated). This is happening in IE6, Fx 1.5.0.7, SeaMonkey 1.3 and Opera 9.

In this one they start being repeated on the second page with Scree's post:

I don't see this issue currently.. if you have 100 posts per page set in your preferences, then the entire response fits into the first page. With 20 posts per page, pagination should appear.

Re: I'm dedicating most code changes/improvements to ..

It's set for 50 and there is pagination with posts being repeated on the second page. This is using Flat mode. It's fine in the default text mode. I prefer Flat mode though. I'll look at some more articles and see if it is doing it today...perhaps it is intermittent. I can always read it in text mode...but I do prefer Flat.

Re: I'm dedicating most code changes/improvements to ..

I don't see a repeat on page 2.
It is easy to check if flat mode is working look at the timestamps. They should only increment on page 1 and then page 2 keep incrementing. Etc.

Re: I'm dedicating most code changes/improvements to ..

I checked a couple of new ones and they are fine. So, then I looked at the one from two days ago that was showing the double posts and that prompted me to ask about it in this thread. That news article now displays correctly in Flat view.

So, I don't know if this is intermittent or what. But everything is fine at the moment. Let's hope it stays that way. (I suspect it is some intermittent something that being fleeting and whimsical you would have a lot of difficulty finding. Hopefully the site gremlins will behave most of the time).

I just had to login. What happened to "back"? I was only given the choices: Favorite forums, updated followed, instant messages, home page. Ugh. My home page since I joined has been »/postlist. So, why can't I get there easily now when I am forced to login? I never log out but I still have to login sometimes especially if I use my other computer here and then come back to this one I am logged out.

Was this just some strange one time anomaly? Or has the "back" choice been removed? If the latter, please put it back! I don't want to go to updated followed. I want to go to followed. I never use Updated Followed. In all these years, I have never once used it. I don't have Favorite forums chosen here and don't want that option. Even if there are instant messages waiting for me, I don't want to open them first. I want to go to my home page which is Followed first. I also don't want to go to the Home page when I login. I want to go to my home page - Followed!

Something's wrong with this. What's the difference between "kbps" and "kb/sec"? Those designations are equivalent. Did you mean to capitalize one of those "b"s?
