2 edits | reply to justin Been a while since I updated this. Lots of changes.
(in no particular order) 1. Added to wake-on-lan tool, cleaned up the interface »/wakeup 2. Line monitoring: cleaned up the interface so it works in dark themes and simplified things, removed outdated report options. Added back longer term CSV download options. »/monitored/mine 3. Speed tests: Fixed the framing for the java applets, and the locations. Improved the final result display. Introduced shareable PNGs for results »/speedtest 4. Test history page. Increased the clarity and amount of information displayed there. »/testhistory 5. Doctor Ping. Added indexes to allow previously hanging URLs to work without error 6. Company list. state Did a great job cleaning the ISP/company database of dead companies and correcting wrong URLs. 7. Speed archive page. Improved the format and the graph functions and the display of user results. »/archive Can now search by subdomain (such as fios.verizon.net) not just main domain. 8. Unassociated reviews list. fatness Did a great job cleaning up the older unassocated reviews 9. Site search. For certain searches, mysql was being dumb about what indexes to use. Adding hints has removed nearly all searches that time out. »/nsearch 10. Continued part time work on the phish tracker project »/phishtrack 11. Added a user maintained map for AT&T U-verse »/gmaps/uverse and tweaked the data window popups on most maps and the add-yourself procedure.
Hardware: Added two very top of the line servers in two different data centers that will eventually free up about six less exciting 2u machines. |

| said by dbmaven :Great stuff there. Any plans for the port scan ? (Sorry if this has been discussed elsewhere.) Not in the immediate immediate future. I always had the feeling that they were a waste of time.. but maybe I'm wrong there. It would be nice to do a new one using ajax that was 'cool' to watch, though.
Some more changes:
1. Added a new NY based speed test only for members (level 1 and above). On »/speedtests page, at the bottom
2. Cleaned up the display of "world" speedtests at »/speedtest?more=1
3. Test history »/testhistory can now be safely (no IPs are revealed) shared with anyone including anonymous users, it can therefore be posted on any forum. The share link is displayed above your test history page.
4. I've integrated google based site search into the site search page - but only if site search is down for administration, or down because it is just borked. Now I can take down the search database to clean it/improve it without feeling like I've taken away site search entirely.
5. The listing of all FAQs is easier to read »/faqnew
6. I've cleaned/simplified up the whole tweak test process »/tweaks to remove old useless info on Windows 98, etc etc. I also fixed up the result page a bit but there is work to do, for example: make the tweak test result go into test history.
7. Fixed most database locks due to inefficient queries, that would cause site hangs for 30-60 second periods from time to time. As a bonus, because the sql server has more time on its hands, I think the pages already feel like they load more quickly in general. |

That page looks a hell of a lot better. There are 2 separate "USA" categories that should be combined, I think.
edit: "Brasil" and "Brazil" can be combined. several "Canada" categories can be combined Nederland and 2 Netherlands Portugal and 2 PORTUGAL Mexico and MEXICO. -- Nose for danger.. |

justin Australian join:1999-05-28 Brooklyn, NY | actually it is a mess for moderators, it includes first the unverified section, then the verified section and extra links for editing them etc. If you look at it when logged out it is much clearer! |
|
fatness subtle Janitor join:2000-11-17 fishing | Yeah, that's quite different while logged out, much better. I can combine several of those categories myself, the ones with few listings, so I'll take care of that. |

About that Speakeasy Test - this is more of an FYI than anything else...
Using it:

Going to www.speakeasy.net/speedtest and selecting New York City:

I don't know if you want to get into trying to explain the differences - but they are substantial. And the DSLR Java test had lots of lag time between each of the different sized files - a couple of seconds (very noticeable). -- Q: When will it be done? A: When pigs fly ! |

1 edit | reply to dbmaven Again, if you are comcast and the Boost turns down before you reach the end of your very long download, the speakeasy test will read too fast if it does a much shorter payload.
I can't find any obvious reason for any inter-file delay, although I did add a script to make sure the virtual machine is not idled out of existance and the files are cached.
edit: just tried it from here. No inter-file delay apparent at all, and the speed is about the highest i can ever get for my feeble time warner connection..

so try it again if you want, at least to see if there is any visible delay before each file.. |

| reply to justin OK - here are tests run back to back to back 1st the "short test" you IM'd:

Then the members Java test to Speakeasy:

And finally from www.speakeasy.net/speedtest -> NYC:
Last Result: Download Speed: 26503 kbps (3312.9 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 3606 kbps (450.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
And for reference: a NAC.Net test:

Since the BBR NAC.NET and SPEAKEASY tests are comparable, perhaps the variability with the on-site Speakeasy test is in the payload file(s)/sizes/contents ? -- Q: When will it be done? A: When pigs fly ! |

| I was told by someone that boost is "triggered" if a file is over a certain size, and then it runs for a while and shuts off.
This makes it very hard to compare. If the file sizes are small, boost is not activated. If they are too large, boost is ineffectual. This is just speculation as I don't have any knowledge of how boost is supposed to work.
I'll keep checking that the new speakeasy based test doesn't slow down at all in doling out files. |

1 edit | I think Comcast has a "boost" that functions the way you describe. OOL's boost is "supposedly" a constant rate - more like the 'premium tier' in some RoadRunner markets.
Oh - and I did not see as much stalling in between files tonite on the BBR Speakeasy NYC test. A little bit on the first one maybe, but after that they were pretty smooth. -- Q: When will it be done? A: When pigs fly ! |

| reply to justin More random stuff
1. An ability to group line monitors together (members of a group get free as in, no TP deduction, services) for the purposes of looking at an area or a single ISP or something. We used to do this manually in FAQs, but is was problematic and fiddly to do it that way An example of a group: »/testhistory?view=1
2. Instant message and online indicator auto-refreshes every 30 seconds (on capable browsers)
3. Java speed tests no longer need to be "clicked to activate"
4. The ability to find a forum suited to certain keywords has been improved, it now uses the proper site search database »/forums/all
5. Further work to identify mysql and page construction bottlenecks
6. Improved the Profile+ editing system.
7. Various small fixes that escape me - mainly stuff broken by the above work.
10. Collection of old servers sitting on my living room table now up to 5 (4 rack mounts and 1 original tower). Hope to make it to 8 before i'm done. |
