| Doorbell Wiring Problem //
I am helping inlaws wire their house. I had my wife pulling doorbell wire and I screwed up in the wiring. I have 4 wires going from each button back to the panel. Thats where the transformer will be. My mistake is I had her pull a 2 wire to the bell from the transformer. I need to get a single tone from one door and a double from the other. I drew a diagram and think I can still make it work like this: 1: wire from the + side of transformer to the common on the doorbell. 2:from the - side of transformer to one terminal of each button 3:from empty terminal on front button to front terminal on doorbell. 4. from empty terminal on back button to back terminal on doorbell. 5: Jumper the wire from empty terinal on the buttons in step 3 and 4 I wish I could post a diagram but hope someone can go from the description? It looks like it should work . Anyone think it will work and can make sense of my post? Thanks. |

Why do you have 4 wire to the button? Do the buttons have 4 terminals? What is the 4th terminal on the doorbell for, is it labeled?
What you wrote sounded fine until it got to the 4th terminal. Most simple 2 tone chimes are wired as you described (with out the extra terminal ) -- Proud Secular Progressive

| Buttons have 2. In this pic I have same setup--except I only have 2 wires to the chimes. In that photo---if I jumped thePurpleand black at the chimes---- both buttons should work as it will ring both front and back while the other button should only ring one set? |

| If you have only 2 wires going to the chime, you can only use one part (either front or back). You could connect more than one button in parallel to activate that one part, but then you can't tell which button was pressed. If you want a front and back ring, you'll either have to run the button wires to the chime or run a 3 conductor wire from the junction point to the chime.
said by Rifleman :The reason for the 4 wire is that was all that was around at the time. If this happens to be "telephone" wire (typically 24 or 26 gauge), you might want to replace it with heavier gauge thermostat or bell wire. (typically 18 gauge) Even over a short run, wire that is too small can cause enough voltage drop to make a doorbell operate erratically. |

| reply to Rifleman As said already, you can make it work with just two wires, but then you won't have a distinctive ring and they won't know who's at what door.
Front door = both chimes Back door = one chime
If you jump it they'll both trigger...heck at that point why bother to jump it, just terminate both on the front screw.
Since you've already run the wire, can you just tie some 3 conductor onto the 2 and pull it through as you take it out? ya know use the 2 conductor as a fish. -- My Blog. Because I desperately need the acknowledgement of others.

| reply to Rifleman Yeahtheyll both trigger if I jump it but on one button from what I can tell in the diagram would oly operate the front--as there is no return through the other button? Probably wrong but tired and aven't done much in last 15 years. I may be able to pull a 3 wire in using the 2 wire---but need to be a contortionist to get in the attic and is full of blown insulation---not fun at all. |
