[Speed] Over 1mbps upload normal?

I have someone on my buddy list in GA who uses comcast and always bragging about speed... He has been able to upload to me at nearly 200KB/s for the first 15~MB of a file (as if powerboost was working on his upload too). It has been like this for atleast 4 months, is he the only one or is there some issue down in GA with the powerboost?

Where in Georgia? I haven't done extensive testing, but on the (not-so-accurate) speed test sites I'm seeing 1-2Mb up as well.

--Later--

I just found a test site that uses a fairly large test file (10 MB) and the upload ran over 2 Mbps until about half way then dropped to the normal speed. So it definitely does appear Comcast is testing speed boost on the upload as well here.

nothing yet in the Atlanta area...up or down, but it would be very nice to see it on the upload side of things.

One thing I don't get is how they recognize what a "large" file is...I mean do they look at some headers or something to see what the size of the file is? Much the same way that browsers can tell (guess) how long the download you are starting will take?

I am curious because my primary use of this feature (if it makes it here) would be over a vpn where they couldn't see this info.

peace

Significant Increase?!?
I live in Reston, Virginia and my area is being used as a test market for Comcast. There is an enormous amount of pressure for Comcast where I live. Just about everyone around here has a bachelor's degree, works in a technical field, has to pay a minimum of over half a million dollars for a typical single family home, and FiOS is everywhere you look, except at my house it seems.

I was getting 16/1 service. I know we aren't supposed to trust speed test sites, and for the most part I completely agree; however, the Speakeasy test results have always been a very good indicator of my internet performance.

I used to see results of 16-18 mbps down with consistent low 900 kbps for an upload speed.

I noticed a significant increase in my upload speeds. I was uploading a large file to my corporate office through my company's VPN, as I often do, and I did a rough calculation of how long I expected the transfer to take based on my upload bandwidth. I found the time to complete the upload to be about half of what I had expected it to be for the size of the file.

I immediately went to test my speed at my usual speed test haunt, and lo and behold, the test results supported what I had seen in real world file transfers.

Those speeds look familiar to me as Adelphia's 16/2. I wonder with the transitions happening, if Comcast is testing 2000 up?
It would be interesting to see your provisioned rates.

This rented modem just won't do it. Any other method to get my provisioned rates, aside from calling Comcast?

Nothing I know short of asking, if they will provide the rates.

Too bad you don't have a Linksys BEFCMU10 v4.

Nah, I have a Terayon, and guess what, I can access the modem config file now.

Woo hoo!

Edit: DOCSIS 2.0 too? Interesting.

Very cool!
I didn't know your modem provided it.

This is a significant finding. So Comcast has upgraded to 16/2 in the 16/1 areas.

It's not Adelphia's config file which is Extreme: 16000/2000
Provisioned Rate: 19300/2410.

Yes, Adelphia was always very liberal with their modem configuration settings when I used their services.

Had you notice the modem ever said DOCSIS 1.1 prior to this.
I just wonder if the DOCSIS info is reporting the software on the modem or what the CMTS is?

Yes, the increased upload speed definitely came packaged with the upgrade to DOCSIS 2.0. That is, if I really am setup with 2.0.

Looking at your config file, it shows "d11" which is DOCSIS 1.1

I would agree with your assessment about version 1.1. There really aren't that many people around here that are still using Comcast, since FiOS is here. I'm enjoying the speed increases.

This makes a lot of sense for the upgrade since a few Adelphia areas were transitioned today. My area being one of them that is 16/2.

Why is it that comcast seems to set the caps above the download speeds and always exactly on the upload speeds??
They know you want to actually achieve those speeds on one side...so why not the other?

It would certainly be nice to see those kinds of speeds offered outside a fios area soon, but I won't hold my breath for very long.

I've always wondered that myself. Perhaps in the past with upload speeds so low they figured it really didn't matter.

How close to the upload caps does the average user get with Comcast?

I have the "Silver" tier (6600/384k + Powerboost) and I usually get anywhere between 357-365k on speed tests. I can't remember a time that I've gotten over 370k.

It seems to be about 360ish for the 384 folks and 700ish for the 768 folks.

I usually get about 710 when I have nothing else going on on my connection.

Looks like there are no people with the 16/1 or ?? tier taking tests on this website to log the results. At least not on the front page.
